We have some showers and storms moving through this morning. We have picked up over an inch of rain with the heavy rain and storms in Otsego. Overnight temps were held in the mid-70s before the rain came through. Yesterday we reached a steamy 88°.
Below is the hazardous weather outlook for our area today:
.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight Thunderstorms are possible both today and tonight, with the best chance occurring this evening and tonight between 700pm and 200am across Central Lower Michigan. A few storms may reach strong to severe levels with damaging winds being the main threat. Locally heavy rain will be possible with storms both today and tonight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday Thunderstorms are once again expected on Wednesday with the best chances occurring in the afternoon and evening along and especially south of Interstate 96. A few storms may once again reach strong to severe levels. The threat of locally heavy rain will continue both Wednesday and Wednesday night as well. Forecast Discussion - Storms ending this morning, fairly dry the bulk of today The SPC HREF shows storms fading this morning as the convection works south through daybreak. By 900am or so expecting the showers and storms to be fading out or moving out of the area to the south. An MCV is apparent in regional radar loops moving into Gratiot County at this time. As the MCV travels to the south and east this should place the area in a zone of subsidence which should make for dry conditions much of the day. - Storms refire/move in this evening and continue overnight Best chance for storms today will be after 400pm in the far eastern CWA towards Highway 127 and across Central Lower Michigan as we work more into the evening hours. Central Lower Michigan will be a focus for convection this afternoon into tonight due to the proximity of a stalled surface boundary across that area. Winds aloft strengthen tonight across Central Lower Michigan, so not out of the realm of possibilities to see a strong to severe storm north of I-96 tonight. SPC has a marginal risk in place or this area. Best chance for severe will be between 700pm and 200am. Wind seems to be the main threat. - Good chance for storms Wed afternoon/evening Southern Lower The surface front that will be draped across Central Lower tonight moves south towards I-94 into Wednesday. The SPC HREF would favor our southern half of the forecast area for showers and storms on Wednesday from roughly Noon through the afternoon and into the evening hours. Deep layer shear is still decent increasing into the 30-40 knot range during the afternoon and evening across the south. SPC HREF indicates some scattered small updraft helicity swaths across out southern two rows of counties, or south of I-96. So not out of the realm of possibilities to see strong to severe storms Wednesday afternoon and evening across our south towards I-94. - Chances for precipitation continues much of the 7day forecast Much of the forecast contains chances for showers or storms from Wednesday night through the remainder of the forecast through next Monday. Troughing aloft is in place much of the time from Thursday through Saturday. Embedded shortwaves moving through the flow should result in chances for precipitation. An upper low sets up in the plains over the weekend and finally moves through the the Great Lakes on Monday. We are likely looking at rain in the Sunday night through Monday night time frame as a warm front lifts through.
91 temp + 74 dewpoint = 101 heat index!
I am so looking forward to the cold front.
That’s getting to the dangerous level. It is smothering out.
Wow Fox weather 7 dayer forecast shows a 82* degree that’s the warmest this coming week ahead with most temps in the mid to high 70’s INDY will take for mid July it could be a lot worse ahhhhh INDY
Huh, CPC maps have flipped again. Couple days ago they were blue, now they’re right back to red again. Where’s that big cool down no one got ready for?
Andy, Here are some rain fall amounts in Kent County. 1.97″ Trufant, 1.28″ Comstock Park, 1.19″ NW Grand Rapids, 1.17″ Northview area, 0.93″ Cedar Springs. 0.75″ here at my house and officially at the air port 0.51″ Holland 0.21″ Muskegon 0.11″ Lansing 0.02″ and at Kalamazoo 0.00″
Slim
Thanks Slim!
Hey Slim seeing how we haven’t had any HOT heat waves yet this Summer question for you my friend what is the least amount of 90’s ever recorded for the month of July for Grand Rapids Michigan?? In my area we have hit 90* degrees only once this Summer running pretty low I say…..Thanks INDY
88 here with a heat index of 96. This may end up being our 8th 90-degree day of the year already…..and we’re only two weeks into summer. Stay hydrated!
I’ve recorded 5 at my house so far, but the # of days with the heat index into the 90’s has been far more than that. Been a lot of brutal days already and we’re not even a week into July yet.
INDY, I believe 2014 had zero 90 degree days *all summer*. That would be the least amount for KGRR.
Yes. there have been 11 years so far with no days of 90 or better at Grand Rapids the last time was in 2014 and that year there were no 90 days all summer long.
Slim
Thanks Slim Mark and Nathan not seeing any 90’s in the near future either in my area Love it!!! INDY ….
This is getting to be quite a hot & humid stretch again. Dew points up to a horrible 75, heat index is into the 90’s yet again. What a cool Summer we’re having?
You know it is too bad that there is no long term record of the Dew Points. It seems to me that in the summer time it has gotten more humid then in the past. At this time it is 84 here with a DP of 74.
Slim
I would agree with that. So odd they keep track of every little thing but not dew points. That’s the first thing I look at when I get up in the morning because what the air is going to feel like is entirely dependent on where the dew point is at.
Looks like 6/10 overnight for Ada…frustrating, as it surely ruined the campfire fuel 🙁
Another steamer today. Only just a few sprinkles early this morning. It was 75 with a dewpoint of 70 when I woke this morning.
Great weekend at the lake. Saturday was perfect with low humidity. Sunday and yesterday were hot and humid, but the lake water was perfect. At least there was a breeze yesterday. The only downside really was that the fish weren’t really biting. The best was between 9:15p-9:45p, but we caught nowhere near the number we usually catch.
1.28 in here in Comstock Park recorded this morning. My garden is happy.
The official total rainfall from this morning is 1.25 inches in Otsego here at the station. The current temp is 75 with a 72 dewpoint.
At 8AM in Key West FL the wind was SE at 35 with gust to 46. The temperature was 77 with a DP of 76 with rain falling. The wind has been gusting over 40 MPH now for over 6 hours. While not a hurricane at this time Elsa is letting her presence known.
Slim
As we march towards mid July already Meijer already has school supplies out crazy where is this Summer going with still with no big heat waves in sight I can handle this weather alright September is coming fast!! …..INDY
The overnight thunderstorm dropped 0.75″ of rain here. The temperature here at my house was 80 at midnight and it held at 79 until the storm came thru at around 4AM. At this time it is clear here with a temperature of 72.
Slim
Hey Slim, what were some of the rain reports in Northern Kent County?
I have some totals for you.
Slim
Temps were at 78 degrees at midnight and dropped to 70 as storms moved through from 5:30 to 6:30 this morning. We picked up an inch of rain in that hour.
There was a lot of lightening all around when I came into work this morning, but we only had a few sprinkles at home. In town though it poured for about 3 minutes, maybe a quick tenth of an inch. Super humid out yet again.
