This is the outlook guess for January from the CPC. From Grand Rapids to the south there is a 33% chance of below normal temps and 34% of near normal – the chances of below normal temps rise this further north you go with 38% in Gaylord. Precipitation chances are 34% of near normal and 33% of above or below normal for the whole state.
“Normal” high temps are 32° for Kalamazoo with lows in the upper teens – for Gaylord it is 26° for daytime highs with lows in the low teens. Normal precip (liquid) is around 2.5 inches or more dependent on where you live in the state. As we all know these ‘guesses’ are subject to change. These guesses would tell me we will see some snow in January.
High pressure continues to dominate our weather for most of the U.S. – we have a weak cold front fighting its way from the north – all this will do is give us a slight increase in clouds today – we will still see plenty of sunshine with temps near 50° or better once again. We have increasing chances of cloudy skies as we move through the week but our temps will remain above normal through the period.
Happy birthday to my wife who is now a young 64…. !!!
It was another awesome day up here snow country! Great skiing with a temp in the upper 30’s! We will be heading home tomorrow just in time for Christmas! A green Christmas may lead to a monster January, February and March! Winter will be hitting fast and hard! Get ready!
Christmas 1982 record will not be broken on Christmas day sorry ….INDY
Christmas dandelion! Out in my front yard there is a dandelion in bloom. While I have seen them is late November and even in early December I do not recall seeing one in bloom in late December.

Wow! At this rate we will be mowing again next week.
I have had pansy’s bloom when we have had mild winters especially up near the house.
Thinking about trying to get a quick 9 in at Maple Hill now that I’m outta work and they are open today!! Golfing 2 days before Christmas?!?? INCREDIBLE!!!
How unusual will temperatures be this week? Normal highs this time of year are in the lower 30s and normal lows are around 20. Our expected low temperatures later this week will be greater than our normal high temperatures!
While no new records look to be set, it will none the less be one of the warmest 6 or 7 days around Christmas, I will post that if it happens.
Slim
Currently 215 pm 45* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE of GR Sunny a fire burning drinking a Sprite with Christmas music deee-lite cranking how restless could that be on the day before Christmas Eve ..INDY …
There seems to be some wild confusion about what is hype and what is fact. Hype would be the constant posts about all the snow we are getting while the facts are we are well below average with the snow, and each day is adding about another inch onto the deficit. Hype would be all the talk of the cold air outbreak just around the corner while the facts are the daily high temps recently are 15 to 20 degrees above average.
In March of 2018 there were just 4 days and in March of 2019 there were just 6 days warmer then yesterdays high of 52 at Grand Rapids.

Winter is lasting longer because you guys want a warm December lol…Your all a jinx let it snow let it snow let it snow …INDY…
Wow, even Traverse City hit 50 yesterday.
I’m heading to Boyne Mountain January 12th better be snow on the ground then …INDY
January 5th Winter will be back with a vengeance stay tuned…INDY
No winter for another 12 days? That sounds fantastic! I love short winters!
At this time more and more long range hints are leaning towards a mild January so there may not be any unusual cold in the foreseeable future. As for a short winter, while it is mild it is still winter and it will stay winter for some time and remember it started in mid November so it still will be a long winter just maybe not a real cold one. Remember last summer was not a real hot one with June cooler then average July warmer and August average and September warmer so all in all not all that warm… Read more »
Short winter as in GR will likely only have 10 days of 2″ or more snow on the ground through December. That is incredible and doesn’t constitute much of a winter, in my opinion.
89 days still spring not to long …INDY
Actually 67 days till meteorological Spring. The days are ticking away!
That’s what you said 2 weeks ago for around the 24th of December. Last week it was the big daddy snow storm for the 29th. Now it’s pushed back another week again?
Any storm on the 29/30th looks to be rain and no cold as far as one can see. Looks to be held up in Canada but that could break out in February? but who know for sure.

I’m thinking January 5th Slim I don’t see any warm coming and yes last Summer was not hot by no means but wet ..And again berry I believe the GFS has called for the storm ..The GFS is a American weather MODLE even in caps they don’t get it carry on!! Lol..INDY
Sounds like someone is getting a little restless from all the green grass around. Sooner or later maybe you’ll get one right!
Remember when Indy posted 5 or 10 dates in December when we were supposed to get a big snow storm?
Breaking news! Despite the warm weather hype, all signs still point towards above normal snowfall and a cold winter! We will be rocking for months on end! Mark it down and take it to the bank! I will book all bets! Meanwhile it is off to the slopes for some more awesome skiing! Nubs is rocking!
Meteorological winter is starting warm and GR will soon be a foot below average snowfall. With temperatures above freezing, even skiing conditions up north have not been good recently. Unless you like icy and mushy snow.
I’m thinking your already packing January vacation is coming and so is cold and snow lol ..INDY
The only one on vacation lately is Rocky who is in search of winter hundreds of miles north!
No he’s a ever day bloger unlike you ..when weather gets cold mokkiee rolls away …. lol..INDY
Christmas day will not be the warmest ever darn ….But probably warmer then Halloween and Thanksgiving this year imagin that ..off to the malls have a nice Monday INDY ..
Yesterday was the 6th warmest December 22nd in Grand Rapids history. And it looks like the period from December 22nd to the 27th could be one of the warmest on record as well. As for January there still is too much uncertainty as to how the month will end up. As there are now hints that the month may be milder than first thought. This could be a year that west Michigan has much less snow than average we shall see. At this time it is now 36 here at my house. There was a lot of frost but that… Read more »
I was just thinking it is warmer now than it was middle of April today. Lol
Depends what day. The middle of April last year saw high temps in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and upper 70’s.
Upper 70’s ???? Lol… INDY
Yes, GR hit 72 degrees on April 21st last year and 77 degrees the following day.
But still ended up below normal April right into May ….Yes!! INDY..
It was the week of the teens…when we had snow, sleet, rain, hail. Lol
Definitely warmer then May lol….INDY
We had only one day in May last year that was colder than the low 50’s.
But never made 80 love it ….below average..INDY
The skiing is awesome and January sounds like cold and snow to me! Bring on all types of snow, such as lake effect, lake enhanced, system snows, clippers, blizzards, winter storm warning winters, weather advisory’s etc! Bring it!
Skiing in southern lower Michigan has been horrendous this season so far! Mushy man made snow on the tiny hills. What a joke!
Sounds like a safe way to make a forecast. A third of a chance average, third of a chance below, and third of a chance above. Should cover everything that happens. Incredible day yesterday! We went to the beach and the parking lot was half full, people everywhere. We walked a mile up and down the shoreline, just perfect out!
We took a short trip over to Bay City and boy it looked more like March than December.
Slim
52 degrees yesterday in GR! More 50’s today? December is now above average temps and well below average snow. What could be better?
