Happy New Year!

We all made it through another year and are ready to start another with a clean slate to fill with new adventures, the first being getting rid of the headaches and hangovers from New Years Eve.  I am not generally a drinking man though I do partake of a fine dark beer or cognac on special occasions such as last night as my wife and I watched the ball drop.

The main question for the rest of the winter is will we have a disruption of the polar low pressure system which has been thus far unmoving from the north pole?  We have not had the right ingredients in place to move the extreme Arctic air into the Midwest and Great Lakes region so far this winter.  I will write about this in my Thursday post to give more detail on how all of this works.

Like a broken record we have no snowstorms in sight and for the most part we have been on the warm side of the storms this winter with moisture feeding in from the gulf of Mexico.  I am still not seeing anything overly exciting in the long range through mid month which will be the halfway point of winter.

Meanwhile this week will be similar as the weeks past this winter with temps seasonally cool for most of the week through Thursday until milder weather returns for the end of the week lasting through most of next week as we return to a more zonal weather pattern from the Pacific.

So, a happy New Year to you all and I hope you have a safe and blessed passage through the rest of the year.

The forecast temps and precipitation (as to whether we get snow or rain) can change in a heartbeat. Sometimes we don’t even get what these maps are saying when they are so far out.

As for the above normal temp and above precip outlook for the 2nd week of January, that could mean some monster heavy wet snowstorms! Bring it! Winter is awesome especially up here is snow country!

Still waiting for those two monster snow storms you guaranteed in December! The 2015 thru 2017 Cleveland Browns have a better record than the RDB!

Wow it is amazing up here in snow country! A fresh 6 to 10 inches of beautiful snow! We will be staying up here the rest of the week for some winter fun! Rock n roll will never die!

The Kirkwood/Rocky cold January is completely missing!

In looking at Grand Rapids history I did find a winter season that “could” be a path to a average to just above average snow fall season. The winter??? 1971/72 At Grand Rapids November 1971 had 14.9” of snow fall (November 2018 had 14.4”) December of 1971 had just 3.7” and was the 7th least snowy December of record here. (December 2018 is in 6th place with 3.2”) January 1972 started out warm and most of the first 13 days were warmer than average. But there was 12.2” of snow in the 13 days. Starting on the 14th of January… Read more »

I’ve noticed you tend to put a big emphasis on past events in regards to today’s weather. Do you really believe the correlation is strong and predictive between the past and the future or do you just have an affinity to past data and wish to recall it? I work in finance and numbers so I love behaviorial tendencies like extrapolation bias and recency bias. I see it a lot in terms of weather talk too.

Slim

So you are a “financial advisor” Where should we put our money in 2019???

Congratulations. We are now past the snowiest part of winter! The daily average snowfall on Jan 1st drops from 0.8” per day to 0.7” per day in GR and continues slowly falling into spring.

Still no snow storms or any major cold air in sight!

Slim

Most of the past winter where the total snow fall was as low as it is this winter have ended up with well below average total snow fall for that season. Two exceptions were 2014/15 note that winter “season” had 31.0″ in November and the winter season of 1971/72 see my other post on that winter.

With Just 3.2″ of total snow fall December 2018 will go down as the 6th least snowy December in Grand Rapids Recorded history. It was no better at Lansing where their 1.3″ is the 3rd lowest in their recorded history and at Lansing that history goes way back to 1863. At Muskegon their 3.2″ came in at 9th place for some reason there have been many low snow fall Decembers at Muskegon. Anyway for anyone who thinks the winter season will “catch” up well good luck as per averages it will become harder as we head deeper into winter.

Another December to remember, placing in the top 10 again. I believe that’s about the 4th time in the past 10 years or so? Seems we are trending towards more and more snowless Winters. How did we place with regards to temperature for both December and 2018?

Slim

December 2018 was the 21st warmest at Grand Rapids. For the year 2018 with a mean of 49.6 came in 20th with a 3 way tie with 1932 and 1911.

Happy New Year everyone! Hopefully this year brings a little more excitement to our weather than the past several. Not to extreme, just something a little more than we’ve had. Now I need to find some aspirin…….
