Great Spring Weather.

I did a lot of yard work yesterday getting the garden ready. It was a nice spring day with the official H/L of 64/38 while very nice it was still a little below average for the date. The was a total of 41% of possible sunshine and late in the afternoon a cloud came by and there was a trace of rain fall from that cloud. The overnight low so far for today is 48 and the current reading here in MBY is 49 and cloudy. For today the average H/L is 66/45 The record high of 89 was set in 1959 and the record low of 28 was set in 1983. The record snow fall of 0.3” fell in 1954 and the record rain fall of 1.76” fell in 1976. Now while that 89 is the reported highest for the date in Weather History we have this for May 5th 1895: An early season heat wave peaks with record highs of 96 degrees at Grand Rapids and 92 at Lansing. The 96 degrees at Grand Rapids is a record for so early in the season. And the record for today in 1895 is reported as missing.

Starting today we are in for some nice warm spring weather with highs in the low to mid 70’s and lows in the low to mid 50’s there are several chances for showers and or thunderstorms.

DISCUSSION
(TODAY THROUGH NEXT THURSDAY)
ISSUED AT 300 AM EDT FRI MAY 5 2023

– MORNING SHOWERS NORTH OF I-96 TODAY –

KGRR/RGNL RADAR TRENDS EARLY THIS MORNING CORROBORATED WITH THE
00Z HREF AND LATEST CAMS ALL SUGGEST THAT SCATTERED SHOWERS WILL
LINGER THIS MORNING NORTH OF I-96 DUE TO WEAK ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE
NORTH OF THE STATIONARY FRONT ACROSS FAR SOUTHERN MI. DRY WX WILL
RETURN ACROSS OUR AREA THIS AFTN THROUGH SATURDAY AS THE RAIN
POTENTIAL STAYS NORTH TO NW OF OUR FCST AREA.

– SLOW MODERATING TREND OF TEMPS THROUGH THE WEEKEND –

TEMPS WILL CONTINUE TO UNDERGO A SLOW MODERATING TREND TODAY
THROUGH THE WEEKEND REACHING WELL INTO THE 60S TODAY AND INTO THE
LOWER TO MIDDLE 70S THIS WEEKEND AS THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE
AMPLIFIES OVER OUR AREA THIS WEEKEND.

– SHOWERS AND STORMS POSSIBLE SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY –

INCREASING MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL RESULT IN POTENTIAL FOR
SOME SHOWERS AND STORMS. ONE RELATIVELY BETTER CHC FOR CONVECTION
WILL COME SATURDAY EVENING ON THE NOSE OF THE 30 KT LLJ AND AS
1000-850 MB MOISTURE TRANSPORT RAMPS UP CONSIDERABLY.

ANOTHER RELATIVELY BETTER CHC FOR PCPN SHOULD COME SUNDAY NIGHT
INTO MONDAY AS A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES EAST ACROSS THE LOWER
GREAT LAKES REGION. THE DETAILS ON EXACT TRACK OF THIS SYSTEM ARE
UNCERTAIN. A FURTHER NORTH PROGRESSION OF THIS SYSTEM WOULD
POTENTIALLY ALLOW MORE INSTABILITY TO DEVELOP. IF IT MOVES FURTHER
SOUTH ACROSS IN/OH WE WOULD LIKELY SEE MOSTLY STRATIFORM SHOWERS
MONDAY.

– DRY WX RETURNS TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY –

AFTER THE AFOREMENTIONED SYSTEM MOVES EAST OF OUR REGION WE EXPECT
A PERIOD OF DRY WX WITH SEASONABLY MILD TEMPS TUE-THUR AS A HIGH
PRESSURE RIDGE BUILDS IN. TEMPS WILL MODERATE WELL INTO THE 70S
AND POTENTIALLY TO NEAR 80 DEGREES BY LATE NEXT WEEK AS SOUTHERLY
RETURN FLOW WAA DEVELOPS ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE DEPARTING RIDG

Breaking – the latest cpc shows colder at the end of May! How is that possible?

My mom and grandma always had a tradition of going out on the week of Mother’s Day to buy hanging flower baskets together. Id say it’s safe to say it’s ok to plant at this point. A worse case scenario you may have to cover it a night but I think we are in the clear at this point.

Today is a beautiful spring day! Great sunrise this morning. Went out early to do some turkey hunting. Won’t be long and summer and humidity will be here. I’m ready for the 80s and some humidity! Bring it.

Summer has started! Pretty much all of May… and then June, July, August, and September. The first half of October is usually very nice too. Going to be another nice long summer!

Too funny!

I wonder if it is safe to plant? The next 2 weeks look warm with lows >40F, so that takes us to May 19th. I know it can still frost/freeze in late May… but it seems pretty unlikely and the plants could just be covered for a night or two if needed.
… it is probably safest to wait another couple weeks however, in case things change

AccuWeather has the coldest low at 48 for the rest of the month. Seems like we are officially done with the cold season now

It’s been safe to plant 95% of things. My neighbors have everything going now.

Yesterday WOOD had only 55 degrees forecasted for next Friday. Not sure why they always do this at the end of their forecasts? Do they like to troll people? Anyway, today Friday’s high is 76 degrees.

Maybe it was a typo? That seems awfully low compared to the models

Yesterday was yet another below normal temp day! The cool streak has been amazing despite all the warm weather hype on her! Incredible!

TGIF! It’s going to be another nice day in lower Michigan. I need to put fresh line on our fishing reels and get ready for the season. I might do that tonight. Lawn will need to be mowed again (for the 5th time already) this weekend too. It’s growing crazy fast right now. The weekend looks fantastic. I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy the Vitamin D.

Have a great Friday friends, and make someone smile 😃

Thanks. I fell ill a week ago today. I feel pretty darned good today. Our boy still feels yucky. Hopefully by the end of the weekend, he’ll be back to full speed. Kids bounce back much faster than us. 🙂

That’s so true about kiddos. Lol.
Wife has stayed good though?

She has similar symptoms but keeps testing negative. Go figure. She had it just before Christmas but I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.
