Warmer

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 58/40 there was a reported trace of rain fall. There was a good amount of sun, but no percentage was give for yesterday. The overnight low at GRR looks to be 39. Here in MBY the low was 36. For today the average H/L is now up to 66/44 the record high of 88 was set in 1949 and the record low of 26 was set in 1971 and 2005. The most rain fall of 1.06” fell in 1902 and the record snow fall amount of 0.4” fell in 1954.

We are on tap for a much needed warm up and the next week looks to see highs in the low 70’s lows in the upper 40’s to low 50’s with several chances of rain and maybe even a thunderstorm or two. At this time while it should be warmer than average no so called “blowtorch” is seen. I for one do not like that term. In my opinion there is no such weather term. But if there was on it would to me seem like record to near record temperatures.

DISCUSSION
(TODAY THROUGH NEXT WEDNESDAY)
ISSUED AT 300 AM EDT THU MAY 4 2023

– COOL START TO THE DAY WITH PATCHY FROST –

A FROST ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH MID MORNING FOR THE
SOUTHERN TWO THIRDS OF OUR FCST AREA. A FAIR AMOUNT OF MID TO HIGH
LEVEL CLOUD COVER IN CONJUNCTION WITH LIGHT BOUNDARY LAYER MIXING
HAS KEPT TEMPS FROM FALLING MORE APPRECIABLY THROUGH EARLY THIS
MORNING. HOWEVER WE WILL KEEP THE HEADLINE INTACT AS TEMPS WILL
CONTINUE TO FALL SLOWLY THROUGH DAYBREAK. AS WINDS DECOUPLE AND
MORE PARTIAL CLEARING OCCURS WE EXPECT PATCHY FROST TO FORM.

– GRADUAL MODERATING TREND OF TEMPS THROUGH THE WEEKEND –

TEMPS WILL REACH THE UPPER 50S TO MID 60S THIS AFTN AFTER A COOL
START TO THE DAY AND WILL REACH THE 60S ACROSS OUR AREA FRIDAY. A
WEAK WARM FRONT WILL RESULT IN DEVELOPMENT OF SCATTERED LIGHT
RAIN SHOWERS MOSTLY NORTH OF I-96 AND PARTICULARLY ACROSS OUR
NORTHERN FCST AREA LATE TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

UPPER LEVEL RIDGING WILL AMPLIFY OVER OUR REGION THIS WEEKEND.
THIS IN CONJUNCTION WITH A FAIR AMOUNT OF SUN AND H8 TEMPS
MODERATING TO 7-9 C SAT AND 9-11 C SUN WILL RESULT IN HIGH TEMPS
REACHING THE UPPER 60S TO MIDDLE 70S THIS WEEKEND.

– SHOWERS AND ISOLATED STORMS POSSIBLE MONDAY –

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING EAST INTO OUR REGION AND ISENTROPIC
UPGLIDE NORTH OF WARM FRONT WILL COMBINE TO BRING POTENTIAL FOR
SHOWERS AND PERHAPS A FEW THUNDERSTORMS MONDAY. CONVECTIVE
POTENTIAL WILL BE LIMITED THOUGH BY WEAK INSTABILITY AND LACK OF
STRONGER FORCING FOR CONVECTIVE INITIATION TO OCCUR.

Take the good with the bad living over near the lakeshore. It’s been sunny here since sunrise. 59 currently and hardly a breeze. Perfect spring day, IMO.

Wow this weather is looking perfect! After a warm summer/fall/winter/April, I still think there’s a good chance May ends up warm too! Today marks the start of 5.5 months of continual awesome weather.

Thanks for the prayers and wishes of recovery from you all. I have heart failure which has been ongoing for quite some time. I collapsed on Sunday and went to the hospital. I now have a defibrillator/pacemaker inserted in my chest and am resting at home. I have a lot of healing and adjusting to my lifestyle. I am not allowed to drive for at least six months or do many things I enjoy doing. I hope to resume doing blog posts on Sunday. My wife and fur buddies are keeping me company and helping me recover.

I think it is safe to say we are about to enter the true nice season. I remember back on groundhogs day, I stated sustained nice spring weather doesn’t come until some point in May. I think we have reached that point. Now we just need to enjoy it before the heat arrives (unless you don’t like the heat)!

“Gully Washer” is not a legit weather term, but I like to use it when it pours outside. It reminds me of my grandpa, as he used to say that. Boy o boy, that sun is blinding this morning. It’s so pretty out. The brief chill is over we are returning to our regularly scheduled programming. We had a lot of things planned for this weekend, but we will have to see if we’re feeling well enough. Oh and our boy came home exhausted from golf practice last night and immediately collapsed on the couch. He had a fever so… Read more »

I remember my older family members using “Gully Washer.” My Gpa would’ve been 123 this year. Lol. He made it to 100!!!
Oh so sorry to hear about your son. I bet he wishes you wouldn’t have shared with him. Prayers for your wife. Covid still worries me. My dad has been gone 15 months because of it. I know we have a better understanding of it…
Hope you are feeling better Michael….
