Yesterday we reached a high of 34° after a low of 26°. Snowfall was .2 of an inch.
We could see some more flurries today, the happy news is we are predicted to start clearing out of this dreary pattern later today with a promise of sunshine tomorrow. Even better, air temps should start rising daily as we progress into the week with upper 50s to near 60° by Wednesday. Of course with the warming temps so do the chances of rain rise.
Forecast Discussion
-- A Brief Visit From Arctic Air -- The expected channel of Arctic air has arrived in the Great Lakes region. 850 mb temperatures no warmer than -14 C will blanket the area, which means even with full mixing, daytime temperatures should stay in the 20s in most locations. This is unusual air for this late in the cold season. Back of the envelope calculation: since the late 1800s, having highs in the 20s after March 26 has an average return period of roughly 7 years. On average our last day in the 20s happens in the March 10-15 time frame. April 13, 1950 stands out as the latest in the year that similar high temperatures have occurred. We will be not much warmer than the record for coldest high temperature recorded on March 27. More numbers for Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo are available in the Climate section. Lake effect snow showers overnight have produced patchy light accumulations on grass and roads, though a more persistent band oriented in the northwest winds has probably put down more than patches just south of Holland and west of Allegan and Kalamazoo. The inversion above the boundary layer will stay above the DGZ today, however, progressively drier air moving in will gradually limit lake effect clouds and snow. Synoptic scale lift in the low levels will also be lacking. Breaks in the clouds should become more common late in the day especially away from Lake Michigan and farther south, away from the upstream moisture contribution of Lake Superior. Gradually moderating temperatures are expected Monday and Tuesday, but it will stay cooler than normal. -- Mid to Late Week Low Pressure System -- Ensembles of the GFS, Canadian, and ECMWF have remained remarkably consistent in depicting the synoptic pattern evolution this week. The details in temperature and precipitation amounts are still to be ironed out, but overall there`s good confidence in the following: A large and deepening low-pressure system moves from the central Plains to Great Lakes Tuesday to Thursday, most likely tracking over Wisconsin or Lake Michigan. Freezing rain changing to rain Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. That could cause some travel issues for Wednesday morning especially in Central Michigan, but the risk of enough ice for power outages seems low. Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week. The risk of severe weather in the form of damaging winds Wednesday evening/night is not zero, but instability is looking quite slim due to a lack of steep mid-level lapse rates and lack of mid-level dry air. However, it should be quite breezy Wednesday evening to Thursday regardless. Snow showers will again be in the cards Thursday night and Friday as cold air wraps around the back side of the low as it temporarily stalls out around Lake Superior.

Great winter with tons of snow and cold! Incredible!
I have a light dusting at my house this morning from last nights snow. This has been a little snowier than usual winter at my house this year. The road by my house still has some snow on it even here at 10am with temp of 23.
The official high at Grand Rapids yesterday was 34 there was a reported 0.5″ of snow fall and at Grand Rapids the seasonal total is now at 70.6″ That is still -4.4″ from the current 30 year average. The overnight low was 23 both here and officially at GRR. I recorded 0.2″ of snow fall and there is a trace of snow on the ground at this time with a temperature of 24 here.

This winter is starting to drag on way too long. I like the snow and all, but I’m definitely ready for spring at this point. Or at least highs of 40+ consistently would be nice. 20s is ridiculous!
Yes and this seems to happen every year lately! We are always seeing winter hanging on till April despite the constant warm weather hype! Incredible!
While it has hung the border line between average and moderate (at this time it is moderate) this winter season is now (according to the Accumulated Winter Season Index) listed as being 134 days long here at Grand Rapids. So while not real cold and snowy it has been a somewhat long winter season.
