Chance of Rain Today

In my travels yesterday I noticed some of the maple trees are beginning to change color as they generally do around here in late August.  They are one of the first trees to begin showing their autumn colors, Chlorophyll, the green pigment used during photosynthesis, masks the yellow and red pigments in leaves. When sunlight and photosynthesis decline in autumn, the green chlorophyll, which is unstable, begins to break down and reveal the underlying colors.  The sun now sets at 8:30 an hour earlier than at the summer solstice.

As a wave of low-pressure tracks in from the west today it will generate scattered showers and thunderstorms. The clouds and precipitation associated with this system are predicted to hold the high temperatures today mostly in the mid-70s north to lower 80s south.  There is currently a line of showers north of Ludington down to Chicago at 6:00 am.  Winds today will be from the SW at 10 to 15 mph.

Forecast Discussion

Regional radar shows a slow moving MCS over Wisconsin ahead of a low
near LSE. A weak 30kt LLJ is feeding moisture into the system and
HiRes models point toward this complex weakening and moving east
across the lake later this morning. The low is progd to move east
today with very little shear associated with it. Thus, we`re not
anticipating any severe storms. However, there is enough instability
to see some scattered storms. Highest chances of rain will be over
the northern cwa, just north of the track of the sfc low.

High pressure will build in behind the trailing cold front tonight,
but there isn`t much cold air behind it. Thus, temperatures Friday
will be similar to today, if not a tad warmer.

As high pressure advances across MI Friday, we`ll see decreasing
cloudiness and quite a bit of sunshine Saturday. Humidity levels
will fall Saturday as dewpoints will fall into the mid/upper 50s.

Models show a sharp trough moving across southern Canada/Northern US
Sunday night and Monday. This will be the catalyst for our next
chance of rain. Precipitable water values increase to 1.5 inches
late Sunday and 2 inches by Monday, so locally heavy rain will be
possible and high humidity Monday and Tuesday is a given. We`ll
start to dry out once the upper trough pushes a cold front through
Tuesday night.

Yesterday was a very warm late summer day here in Grand Rapids. The official H/L was 85/60. There was no rain fall and the sun was out 85% of the time. The overnight low here in MBY was 65 and the official low at GRR looks to have been 64. At the current time it is cloudy here and 66. There are some showers to the west over Lake Michigan that should be moving in in a little while. For today average H/L is 80/60. The record high of 94 was set in 1948 and again in 1959. The record… Read more »

Well yesterday was quite the day. I ended up getting attacked by a dog and had to seek medical attention. I’m doing OK, just pretty sore in the places I was bit. Could have been worse I guess. Other than that yesterday was great the weather was fantastic.

Sorry to hear that you were attacked by a dog. I hope you recover OK. Depending on what happened it might be a good idea after you get all the medical needs met to seek some legal advice. Earlier this summer I came face to face with a Pitbull and while the dog snarled and me and scared the $hit out of me I was able to back away and then called 911 and have animal control pick the dog up. I love pets but people have to keep them under control. If you went to the doctor they have… Read more »

Kyle that is awful. I am sure the next few days you’ll be sore. Take of that wounds and speedy recovery.

Thank you. The company I work for is looking into all these things. A big concern of mine is if the dog is updated on all of its vaccines. Believe me I am very pissed off about what happened. Never got an apology and no one asked if I was ok at the house. People need to control there pets when people arrive. It all comes down to irresponsible dog owners.
