Air Quality Alert – Hot Today

Yesterday we had a high of 84°, the low was 64°.

We have an Air Quality Alert for the Following Counites in SW Michigan: Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, and Van Buren.  It will be another warm summer day with high temperatures up to around 90°. Skies will become partly sunny through the day as high clouds increase. Southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph can be expected.  Chances of rain tonight aren’t that great as we are in the 20% range, chance are better north of Grand Rapids.

Forecast Discussion

...Lowering trends for showers and storms today..

An upper level low situated over the northern Great Lakes will
bring warm air associated with a quasi stationary boundary down
through the region. this will skirt the northern half of central
Michigan. However, the system continues to dry, with an increase
of stability. This and a mid to low level ridging through the
western portion of the state will preclude any widespread
convection. Latest HREF gives indication for the chance for
scattered convection but that shouldn`t occur until the passage
of a cold front with a low level jet tonight into tomorrow.

...Warm and Humid this week...

A large upper level low will move through the northern Great lakes
through the week. This low will deepen and intensify as it moves
eastward. However, any significant showers will be through
eastern Michigan with only light showers along the US 127
corridor. Temperatures will continue to trend warm with this week
possibly the warmest through the region so far this year. Max
temperatures will remain in the upper 80s to low 90s through the
week.

...Next significant chance of Rain this weekend...

The upper level low will drift east and northward and should
merge with a larger low. This will create a zonal flow with a
moisture boundary along it this weekend. The flow of moisture
along this boundary has slightly anomalous GEFS anomalous PWATS.
If this baroclinic zone continues it could see the best chance for
widespread rain.

Another air quality alert day? How many have we had already? It’s getting to be like the non stop winter weather advisory’s for a tenth of an inch of snow. Maybe they should come up with a new one, like Summer Weather Advisory. Hit 89.6 here yesterday. Technically not 90 unless your thermometer rounds up. Not sure who can tell the difference between 89.6 and 90.0

I am not sure why we need Air Quality Alert days. but hey it looks like in the US we need some kind of issues and or warmings for everything. As for who can tell the difference between 88,89, 90, 91ect well who can tell the difference between 35,34,33. Most people can not. They say it is hot or cold. As for the AQA I will post the official forecast for London and see the difference in their forecast compared to ours in the US. Take a look at not only the NWS but the for profit weather people like… Read more »

For sure a lot less hype than what most of our forecasts have. Interesting read though. Totally different perspective and take on weather.

Scotland has a new all time high temp record of 94.6 degrees – smashing the old record by more than three degrees.

More than 1,100 people have died in this latest heat wave in Europe. It is unbelievable.

Just heard that there is a 102 temp in England – the highest temp ever recorded in the UK. We’ll have to wait to see if there are any other higher temps recorded.

Forecasted high for Paris today is 106, 100 for Berlin, and even 87 in Edinburgh.

Yesterday was a very warm day with an official H/L of 89/65 at Grand Rapids. It was very warm to hot across the state of Michigan. The state high looks to have been 93 at Traverse City. Even in the UP readings were mostly in the upper 80’s to low 90’s the coolest high at a reporting station yesterday was 78 at Copper Harbor. Other cooler locations were 83 at Holland and 85 at Muskegon. The rest of this week looks the same very warm to hot and rather dry. At this time the best chance of rain looks to… Read more »
