We picked up another awesome one inch of snow overnight here in Otsego. I am sure many are panicked over the decision of whether to get out the snowblower, shovel or just leave it be. We have enough hard decisions to make in the course of the day and now we have another headache to deal with.
We have chipmunks that come to feed at our bird feeders every day, they love the sunflower seeds. The snow doesn’t bother them as they travel through the trees to get to their destination. I am amazed and amused watching them gracefully scamper from branch to branch without breaking pace seemingly defying gravity. They aren’t as skittish as the squirrels who also visit the feeders and will remain in place eating while I move around the yard watching them as the squirrels fly off every which way.
Squirrels can appear to have a deathwish when they move through the trees on branches and twigs which bend precariously under their weight. I have seen them hang from one foot to get to a tasty morsel below them. I have never seen one fall.
Occasional snow will continue through today and into the evening. The temperature will be falling sharply for the morning commute which could lead to icy roads. Motorists should be alert for impacted travel conditions due to the wintry conditions. In addition, lake effect snow showers are likely to extend the travel impacts Thursday night, mainly west of a Big Rapids to Kalamazoo line.
Our winter weather advisory expires at 7 pm this evening, I don’t expect more than another inch or so in most areas in the advisory area.
The big story is the cold which will settle in later today, tonight into Friday. Tonight it will be mostly clear, with a low around 9 and wind chill values as low as -4 with a south wind 6 to 10 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph. This could be our coldest air of the season thus far.
Another quick hitting clipper system is expected for Saturday with 1-3 additional inches of snowfall possible. With some possible lake enhancement with southwest flow, areas along and west of US-131 look to have the best chance for accumulating snow, especially north of I-96.
Amazing more snow coming Saturday …When mokiee says very little snow coming for Feb. It snows …..Love it!!! INDY
Yes and we are currently entrenched in a cold and snowy pattern! A Clipper Saturday and more cold and snow next week! How is that possible with all the no snow and warm weather hype? Incredible!
Warm weather hype this 10*’ degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE of GR ….Cold …INDY
Is that lake effect gonna hit Grand Rapids tonight!
No just flurries or very light snow!
Im thinking tomorrow in GR ..INDY
What a storm. I am now up 3.5 inches of fresh snow! Time to get the snowblower cranking! Keep it coming!
Meanwhile GR reporting a whopping one inch today. Go figure!
The snow just keeps coming! What a great pattern!
Roads are very slippery in MOST of west Michigan temp is 19* degrees outside very cold …Stay warmm! INDY
Maybe that is why we are in a WWA! What a concept and great call! Thanks NWS!
I was considering shoveling when I get home from work, but what little snow is out there will likely melt within a week.
The kids were disappointed once again this morning. They so want a snow day. We have yet to have one this season. Last year at this time, we had five or six already.
Great call NWS!
The snow has ended and the sun is now peeking out, what a storm? Net total from this raging snowstorm…….a inch and 6 or 7 tenths! Anyone remember the days when we used to have “storms” routinely give us 6 to 10 inches?
Just took a couple of snow fall measurements and the total here at my house is now at just under 2″ so will call it 2″. At this time some light snow and blowing snow with a temperature here of 21
Slim
Imagine how many advisory’s would need to be issued if this was a normal Winter! We would end up with about 63 advisory’s over the course of the season.
But we did get Winter Storm Not. That has to be a first.
Slim
Ha, yes, that will be one to remember!
LOL @ Winter Storm Not. That’s a good one.
Wow good call Rocky the roads are getting worse outside even in my truck I sliding around …INDY

Slim
Slim what is GR average snowfall for the year …INDY
Around 75″ But of all the averages snow fall varies the most as there can be a big difference year to year.
Slim
That is getting to be a huge deficit along the lakeshore! This makes 2 years in a row well below average with little to no lake effect,
If the lake was not there this area would have a yearly snow fall average of around 40 to 50″ That is what they get to the west of here. Also it would be colder in the winter and warmer in the summer.
Slim
Great job by the nws! Definitely WWA worthy! Thanks for alerting the public about the road hazards! Excellent!
GR is now 14″ below average snowfall on the season and more than 14″ below last winter at this time.
Did not know today was the last day of Winter did I miss something ?? Lol…INDY
Indy as of yesterday Grand Rapids is now at -13.8″ for where GR should be (on average) for this date
Slim
Im thinking we will make that up by April slim you ?? INDY
Great job Indy! Keep up the great work!
A WWA for a 1/2” of snow and zero school closings. This is the third failure in a row for NWS GRR.
I think they have a quota to fill for the # of advisory’s?
Current wind driven snow falling out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE of GR 20* degree’s well below normal for Feb.13th brrrr love it ….INDY
After a high temp of 30.6 at 7 am we have dropped to 24.1 with some light snow…
WOOD has upper 30’s Sunday and now 40 on Tuesday. There goes our 1 inch.
Amazing a inch of snow in zland lets have a blog party Im bringing the sprites …INDY
Amazing how an inch of snow brings out the snow crazies! Sure are desperate this year.
Wrong thats ROCKYS snow maps ..Next …INDY..
We had 2 squirrels that were coming to our feeders, but oddly they were both laying out in the road the other day so now we have none. As for snow overnight, just like Otsego we maybe had an inch. Surprised they didn’t just call another “Warning”. Lol
I’m sure glad West Michigan had a WWA for this while the rest of the state did not LOL
Holy mookies its snowing in MOST of west Michigan I suspect a quiet blog today and no snow in Zland Michigan lol this maybe the perfect Winter day to go out and play …Let it snow let snow let it snow …Have another snowy Thursday ….INDY
We could be approaching 50 inches of snow for the season by the end of this week! Who would have thought and yes it is a great winter day and a great winter pattern!
50″ by the end of meteorological winter. What a joke!
Keep saying very little snowfall coming = above normal snowfall for Feb!! Thank you mokiee…INDY
Mookie, You know that to the west of Grand Rapids that Madison and Milwaukee the average for a winter season is around 50″ so on the other side of the lake 50″ for a winter would be “average”
Slim
And 79.9* = 80* degrees …Thanks for the facts Slim …..INDY …
The roads are bad and getting Worse! Great job by the NWS for the WWA! The snow just keeps coming and we currently have great outdoor winter sports conditions! No warm up next week! How is that possible?
Bring it! Great pattern!
I saw that hmmmm the more warm weather hype there is the colder it gets lol…INDY
2 inches and counting, and more snow as we speak and dropping temps and then wind! Incredible!
