At 2:08 p.m. EDT (1808 GMT), the moon will arrive at its closest point to Earth in 2020: a distance of 221,772 miles (356,907 kilometers) away. And 8 hours and 35 minutes later, the moon will officially turn full.
Although a full moon theoretically lasts just a moment, that moment is imperceptible to ordinary observation, and for a day or so before and after most will speak of seeing the nearly full moon as “full,” although if you look carefully enough, you’ll be able to tell that on Monday night and Wednesday night, the moon will appear ever-so-slightly out of roundness compared to Tuesday night. The narrow strip of darkness will appear on the left side of the moon on Monday and the right side of the moon on Wednesday.
What was once called a “perigean full moon” is now referred to in popular parlance, as a “supermoon.”
In addition, the near coincidence of Tuesday’s full moon with perigee will result in a dramatically large range of high and low ocean tides; high tides will run higher than normal and low tides will be lower than normal.
Any coastal storm at sea around this time will almost certainly aggravate coastal flooding problems. Such an extreme tide is known as a perigean spring tide, the word spring being derived from the German “springen” — meaning to “spring up” — and is not, as is often mistaken, a reference to the spring season.
This is a good time to swap recipes as was brought up yesterday. If we can’t go out to eat we can make some great dishes at home. I have several recipes which I am in charge of cooking, my wife has her own.
One of my favorites is chicken noodle soup which requires a large kettle and a large whole chicken. When I make it, it has to serve 18 people. I am not one who uses a recipe card when I cook so you can add your own spices and adjust the recipe to meet your needs.
You place the chicken in the pot and fill with enough to cover the chicken. Let it boil for about an hour or so (dependent on the size of the chicken) then place chopped carrots and celery or whatever veggies you like in the pot and let boil for another half to one hour until the meat starts falling off the bone. I like to add a lot of garlic and other spices to the mix.
Remove the chicken from the pot and remove all the meat from the bones, cut it into chunks and place it back in the pot. Once you have the boned chicken back in the pot let it simmer until the veggies are soft. Add a package of noodles (I use the wide ones) and stir them into the mix, let it boil stirring it often until the noodles are soft. We generally have little or none left even with a full kettle made, everyone loves it.
We are in the enhanced risk area for severe weather mainly after 6 pm this evening. The main risk is strong wind gusts, hail and an isolated tornado…
And now, for your viewing pleasure, Popeye vs Sinbad the Sailor from 1936

What a talented man.
Storm just moved out – quarter sized hail got pretty noisey bouncing off the house. Photos tomorrow…
I have some too.
Lots of lightning, thunder, pea size and a little bigger hail mixed for about 10 mins or so
A free, evening light show…
There was a quick 0.61″ of rain here. It is now dark to the S and SE of here. The storm is now over for here.

It is looking very dark sw of me.
Lot of lightening, heavy rain for 10 minutes, and some pea size hail at the back edge. No wind at all.
The storm is to the SE of here at this time. There is clearing to the west and northwest of here now.

Some rain, thunder lightning no wind. No hail. Moved quick.
Compliments to the cells passing to my South. Constant flashes, and non-stop, gentle, rolling thunder. I guess I’ll grab the loveseat, and watch for a while.
Did have some small hail here at the back edge. The storm is just to the SE of here at this time.
Slim
Constant lightning. No wind. No hail yet. Not severe level here.
Friends in the area reported pea to dime sized hail. Great light show.
A lot of lightning to the SE of here and very dark at this time. The wind has picked up but not too bad there is some heavy rain falling at this time.
Slim
Warning, but nothing really to warrant. Some heavy rain and lightning is about all.
Nice day. Heard a couple of rumbles, and…it’s gone. Routine. Snow blower, shovels, winter coats, etc…through May. No surprise, as we are the Southern Arctic.
Getting some lightning with moderate rain. Dark with just a little wind. Temperature is at 65
