November 1963

I know that there are many who think that the state of our world is a lot worse today then it was in the past but is it really? In every one’s life there are some dates that stick into your mind for the rest of your life. One of those dates in my mind is November 22, 1963. And the days that followed. It is odd how some things just stay with you over the years and other things you forget soon after they happen. Of course, we know that on this date that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. And over that weekend the man who is thought to have killed him. Lee Harvey Oswald was himself shot and killed on national TV.
Just like this year November 22, 1963 was on a Friday and I was in school waiting for the weekend to get here I am not sure if I had any plans for that weekend but just not being is school must have been one of them. It was around 2 PM when the chime from the school office came over the intercom and by the sound of the principal voice, we knew it did not sound good. As this was in the middle of the cold war one of the first things, I thought was war. But that was not the case the news was told to us that President John F. Kennedy was shot but no word yet to how bad it was. But in light of the events we were being dismissed early for the day. I have to day my thoughts were mixed at that time. My dad was not a big fan of Kennedy and he claims he voted for Nixon and I believe he did. My mom did no say who she voted for but my guess is she may have voted for Kennedy. One of the things other things that have stayed in my mind was just how warm it was here in Michigan that late November to was cloudy but well into the 60’s that day. I got home just in time to watch Walter Cronkite on TV tell us that the President had died. And that Lyndon Johnson would be soon sworn is as president. As many other who had TV’s at that time we spent Friday night watching the new coverage (there was nothing else to watch) I do not remember either my mom or dad saying much of anything at the time other than my dad saying ever thing would be OK and work it self out.
I know we went to the movies on Saturday but you know I do not remember what move we seen. But I remember that Saturday during the day was still warm but later that night a cold front come thru and there was a “cold wave warning” for Saturday night. Then came Sunday and it was sunny out that day and my dad and me were out in the yard working on his car. I still remember my mom yelling out the side door to come inside as someone had just shot Oswald and it was on TV.

. I know many generations has had one or more events that will “burn” into your memory. The  assassination of John Kennedy was one of mine. Before 11/22/1963 there was December 7th 1941. In the 1970’s it might have been August 9th the day Nixon resigned. Maybe in the 1980’s it was November 9th 1989 the day the Berlin wall came down. Of course more recently it was 9/11/2001. And there have been so many shootings in the last few years that it is hard to list them all. Of course history tells us that while we do not know when or what but there will be a day that will “change history”  Just hope that day is a long ways off and does’t change everything too much.

As I mentioned there was a “cold wave warning” for Saturday night and the temperature fell from 60 to 30 that night and there was some snow fall and on Sunday the H/L was 37/24

Great post Slim. I remember the assassination of President Kennedy too. I was sitting in school when it happened. I remember watching his funeral on TV. The sound of the drums too. We have seen and heard alot in history in our time. I like to tell the grand kids about things that I know. When we had the first man on the moon I was sitting in class in Hartford taking classes to get ahead that summer ( I had graduated). It is funny how we relate where we were and what we were doing when things in history… Read more »

Good write up Slim. Kennedy was a bit before my time. One of the big moments I remember everything about was when I was in school and the Challenger blew up. Shuttle launches had become “routine”, but our science teacher was one of the final group to be chosen to send to space but wasn’t picked, so they had TVs rolled into the classroom to watch. Of course watching it live with all the fanfare of sending a teacher into space made for quite a shock as we watched it blow to pieces.

Barry… I was going to say that too! We had a sub that day and her daughter worked for NASA. I mean everything was about Christa McAuliffe being the first teacher in space. It was hard to watch when we got home from school.

Only time I complain is when it’s hot and humid. Please share all these complaints I must have posted because I can’t find them. Correcting wrongly posted items, sure, I’ll do that anyday.

It seems every generation has its days of infamous memories – like Slim I remember the assassination of Kennedy – my kids had 9/11 and the great generation had the announcement of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and WW2. There are many in the world who suffer through regimes of terror not knowing what is going to happen day to day. We had the gas crisis in the 70s when gas was rationed and other relatively minor events in the grand scheme of things – we as Americans are relatively lucky and blessed as a nation….. Thanks Slim….
