This is going to be one of those weeks when business is going to be slow weather wise across a good portion of the U.S. due to a large a area of high pressure. This is a good thing because of the high river levels and flooding not only in Michigan but the northern plains and Rockies due to rapid snow melt and heavy rains.
Flood warnings continue for:
Grand River Near Comstock Park affecting Kent County Grand River –
At Robinson Township affecting Ottawa County –
Maple River At Maple Rapids affecting Clinton County –
Muskegon River At Newaygo affecting Newaygo County –
Muskegon River At Bridgeton affecting Newaygo County
Here is a link to Storm Reports which is an interactive map for the U.S. and current flood conditions for Michigan.
I think this is the time of year I dislike the most due to the lack of vegetation, muddy fields and back roads. I live at the end of a dead end road which is now full of craters and holes and small ponds.
We are now almost equal between daylight and night time and will gain about three minutes of daylight per day. It is almost time to shop for the spring fertilizers for the lawn. I have found that fertilizer is the best deterrent for mole problems. We had a population explosion of the little critters last fall and my front lawn is full of mole runs. The fertilizer will chase the moles to the neighbors yards rather than kill them. When I lived in Hamilton years ago this upset the neighbors as I had the nicest yard on the block while theirs were torn up and full of mole hills. Where I live now it will chase them down into the woods where they should be much happier.
A ski trip to the UP or southern Canada may be in my future! Incredible!

FACT! GR is above normal for seasonal snowfall despite the propaganda from mookie! I may need to reconsider stopping my skiing, based on the latest snow maps! Hello snow country!

Well it is also FACT that the lakeshore areas from where I live West are below normal snowfall. Main reason for that is anytime there was significant lake effect, the winds blew it all inland so we never received it.
Rock on Barry. You are correct!
And the beat snows on ..lol.INDY!
In other weather news. The temperature here at my house is now at 42 and at the airport the last reading was 41. The average high for today is 45.

Feels nice for what is supposed to be the “coldest” day of the next 8-10 days.
Michael,
Would love to know what deters your moles? Does it work on chipmunks too? Those buggers were AWFUL last year!!!!
Here are the snow fall totals so far in southern lower Michigan. Grand Rapids 75.8” Lansing a reported 37.2” but they are missing all snow fall for the last 9 days of January. Muskegon 69.4” on the east side of the state Flint 42.9”, Saginaw 41.9” and Detroit just 29.9” Most locations are near or just above average with Lansing reporting below average and Detroit well below average. But when looking at where the snow fall was in mid January the 2nd half was much snowier then average for the period of January 22 to March 1st
Slim
Lansing is below, and so is pretty much all of West Michigan (except GR) even though they aren’t “official.” Detroit is way below average too.
Lansing has several days in January that are not counted. While they may be below average we do not know by how much. I can say it is more then the reported 37.2″ The only official reporting stations in west Michigan are GR Muskegon and while Lansing is in the GR forecast area they are more central Michigan then west Michigan.
Slim
What is your point? Give it up, you predicted below normal snowfall for GR and we have above snowfall and virtually every reporting station in northern mi is above normal! Face the facts, this was a snowy winter with great outdoor winter sports conditions!! The skiing this past weekend was perfect!
Not only are we gaining daylight at a rapid rate we are also gaining temperatures also. The average H/L today is 45/27 and by Saturday it is 48/29 and by next Monday it is 48/30. One thing to keep in mind is that there is still a lot of snow and ice to our north so anytime we have a NW or north wind it will be a cool one. Also a term we will hear a lot of for some time is “cooler by the lake” It looks like the official low at GRR last night was 20 while… Read more »
What a perfect week ahead! Mid 40’s rising to near 60 degrees by the weekend.
Better yet, still no measurable snow for 11 days and counting, and the current CPC’s show nothing but above average temps ahead!
Better yet we had a above normal Snowfall this year so it can be done let’s work on getting temps above normal because March is still running below normal such a transition month lol …INDY!
Most of southern lower Michigan received below average snowfall this year. GR received about average.
Of the 6 major reporting locations 3 above and 2 below and 1 (Lansing) incomplete
Slim
Why is Lansing incomplete?
The last 9 days of January’s snow fall are missing. On January 22nd Lansing had a H/L of 31/4 with 0.10 precipitation but no snow reported the same day GR had 0.11 precipitation and 0.9” of snow. On January 28th Lansing had a H/L of 20/-1 with 0.53” of precipitation and no snow, GR on that date had 0.57” of precipitation and 4.7” of snow. There are two other dates with 0.01” precipitation and no snow (temps in the low teens) and one day with 0.05” of precipitation and no snow fall

How odd. Thanks Slim.
Lansing is below, and so is pretty much all of West Michigan (except GR) even though they aren’t “official.” Detroit is way below.
Lansing snow fall for January is incomplete. There are 9 days of missing snow fall amounts.

Give it up slim, mookie never admits when he is wrong or when you prove his comments and data are totally incorrect!
