End of January

We are now closing out January which has been our snowiest month of winter thus far.  We are at 2.5 inches from the system which is now passing through (at 4 am).  This brings us to 13.5 inches for January and 19.2 inches for the season (these are Otsego measurements), most of which fell from 12/26/2020 to our current totals today.  We still need another 21 inches to exceed last year’s total.

Our Winter Weather advisory ends at noon today.  Snow showers may continue off and on with little accumulation through the day and winds will be gusty to 30 mph.

There was a discussion yesterday on the terminology of the Winter Weather Advisory which replaced the travelers advisory used years ago.  Here is the NWS explanation:

Winter weather advisory (WSW) – Hazardous winter weather conditions are occurring, imminent, or likely. Conditions will cause a significant inconvenience and if caution is not exercised, may result in a potential threat to life and/or property. The generic term, Winter Weather Advisory (which replaced the previously used “Travelers Advisory”), is used for a combination of two or more of the following events; snow, freezing rain or freezing drizzle, sleet, and blowing snow. The forecast accumulation criteria—defined below locally designated warning criteria or based on NWS impact-driven advisory criteria—for at least one of the frozen precipitation elements within a defined 12 or 24 hour period vary significantly over different county warning areas. The National Weather Service has deprecated the snow advisory and blowing snow advisory in favor of issuing a winter weather advisory for snow or a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow, respectively.

Great call by the NWS for the advisory! The roads this am were treacherous! Also another bingo for the RDB model! Incredible!

Only about 2” in GR. Get ready for another dry, below average snowfall week!

2.9 inches in my driveway, probably skewed a bit from with wind… wife got me up, clucking like a chicken that I needed to get out and blow snow or we may not be able to get out of the driveway! She was a young teen during the winter of 77-78. That tells you how tepid these past few winters have been, and affected what people perceive as a lot of snow.

I’m guessing an inch or two here. Hard to tell with the blowing and drifting. There are some bare spots in the driveway and out back.

Here at my house I have recorded 1.7″ of new snow fall so far. At this time light snow is falling with a reading of 25.

Sounds great and GR is well on their way to picking up 2 to 3 inches from this storm!

While this January will end up above average is the temperature department. We will not know the final numbers until tomorrow but the high for the month was only 41 that will be the coldest maximum for any January since 2009. The low for the month was a mild 11 and that will be the warmest minimum since 2006 and the 7th warmest in Grand Rapids recorded history. The total snow fall will end up well below average but there will have been a total of 23 days with at least one inch on the ground at Grand Rapids and… Read more »
