Power outages remain a concern for southern Michigan – my stepdaughter east of Plainwell has been without power since early yesterday morning, This is the Consumers outage map as of 6 am this morning. There are still 179000 affected.
After some melting yesterday and refreezing the back roads are slick so take care if you have to travel on them. After a few morning flurries, partly sunny skies are expected today with highs in the 20s. Light snow is again possible tonight, mainly north of I-96 where an inch of snow could accumulate. Another strong low-pressure system will approach Monday and may result in a wintry mix over interior portions of central Lower Michigan (yuck).

- Light snow showers early today and again tonight - NW flow lake effect snow showers will continue early this morning as h8 temps fall to -14 to -16 C and the brisk nw winds will carry the snow showers well inland. However the snow showers will gradually taper off from mid to late morning as h8 temps already begin to moderate and sfc ridging builds in. A brief period of lift tied to a weak upper level disturbance will bring light snow mainly north of I-96 tonight but with very light accumulations of around an inch or less. - Fair weather this weekend then mixed precipitation Monday - Sfc/upper ridging will bring fair wx this weekend. Moisture will increase Sunday night as strong southerly flow waa develops out ahead of a strong low pressure system moving east from the central Plains states. A wintry mix of pcpn will likely develop early Monday morning due to strong isentropic upglide and moisture advection. Thermal profiles prior to 12Z Mon show potential for mixed pcpn before moderating sufficiently enough for rain for our southern fcst area during the day Monday. However the threat for some icing and mixed pcpn will linger through much of the day across our northern counties. Strong winds are expected on the back side of this departing system Monday night into Tuesday. In terms of a potential late week system it is noted that both 00Z deterministic gfs and ecmwf guidance has trended much further se with the system. Forecast confidence that far out in time is low given an enormous spread in 00Z ecmwf and gefs ensemble low locations by then. 00Z gefs ensembles do show a bit more potential for a system to move through the lower OH valley region by around next Friday but the spread in low locations is large. Therefore it is looking much more doubtful that a major low pressure system will impact our region late next week.
Even though it was cold today it was wonderful to see and feel the sunshine. I put salt (that is pet and veg safe) down on the driveway and it sure helped. It is mostly dry now. Hopefully we have more sun on Saturday and Sunday. My yard is so icy you can walk on it. My dog is not liking it at all.
I wonder how many winters we have Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings all in the same winter around here. I can’t remember a time of that happening before, but maybe it has.
I don’t recall this either.
The AWSSI is a tool that can be used to estimate how severe winter conditions are at a location based on how conditions have been in the past. At Grand Rapids the current value is 488 for a borderline moderate/mild winter and at Lansing the value is 346 for a mild winter season. Across the eastern US most locations have had a mild winter season. In Michigan only Marquette and Ironwood seem to have had a average winter season. But at Marquette with a value of 1452 is average to the west at Herman a value of 1625 is mild… Read more »
Very interesting. I was unaware of a corresponding numeric value.
Although the temp is sub-freezing today, the warm sun has wiped out 90% of the white stuff. Our streets and sidewalks are clear and dry.
No end to the snow…March, April. My 110 inch snowfall prediction is almost too easy at this point. The Southern Arctic.
I’m looking forward to the ice melting off the sidewalks. My dog hasn’t gone on a walk in a few days (and neither have I!)
My dog is not liking this weather at all.
Michael.. I was surprised to see Plainwell & Otsego had school due to their wide district and the power outages for many still that go into Kazoo county. My Aunt lives in Kazoo she said her street is littered with limbs and trees. Luckily, she did not lose power. A friend on tht other side of the state said they got it pretty good at her house! She has limb hanging that is on power lines that keeps making power go in & off. Mark… Love your new signature..make someone smile. Our hill is still so icy. Ugh. Dogs are… Read more »
Thanks SS. It doesn’t take much to make a positive impact. If everyone did just one nice gesture every day, our world would be a better place. Say hi, smile, hold a door, pay a compliment, etc.
I love your idea and couldn’t agree more.
Im sitting at 91 inches of snow for the Wimter season out in my hood should be no problem breaking the century mark by April 1st! This wimter will go down as the Wimter of the storm!! Wow to the wow …INDY
Yes, we have seen an ice storm warning, winter storm warning, blizzard warning and a multitude of WWA! What a winter! Later people off to the ski resort! Enjoy the winter!
FACT – GR is still a whopping 20 inches above normal for seasonal snowfall! Wow just wow! Skiing here I come baby! Incredible!
Last night at midnight repair crews showed up to repair 2 downed power lines on the edge of my property. They finally got power restored at 5 AM. Did I mention I didn’t get much sleep.
Things are a mess along the I-94 corridor.
GR is now in the bottom 20% of weakest winters ever recorded. Many parts of Lower Michigan are now in the bottom 10% of weakest winters. We sure have had it easy this year.
What is that index you mentioned regarding the winter severity? I haven’t taken a look at it this year… would be interesting to see what it shows
That’s what I have been referencing: AWSSI
Lol weakest winters with above average snowfall now thats funny …. The way tis winter is going it may snow in April DDDDDD…INDY
Total snowfall is only measurement of a winter’s strength. Cold days, how long and how much snow on the ground, wind chills, subzero temps, etc
This winter season has been a very mild, but at some locations there have been 3 major snow fall events that have melted rather quickly.
Slim
A tiny bit of unusable icy snow on the ground. Temps above freezing as far as the eye can see. No signs of any big snow. Meteorological spring in 5 days. I love it!
Lest hope we have a nice long hot summer with many days with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s

Yikes. Some folks may not got their power restored until early next week. The sun is shining through the clouds here. It’s a pretty morning.
Make someone smile, and have a great day.
Another beautiful Winter day in late February getting the sled out going sledding then coming home having some hot chocolate with only 25 days to Spring living it it up with fresh snow still on the ground temperatures in the 20’s ohhh helll yeahhhhh!! INDY
Rock on Indy! Winter is awesome and GR has been hammered this year!
There is still a good 1.5” of snow/sleet/ice in the yard. They did plow the road yesterday and there is a good size snow/ice pile at the end of the driveway. I did not clear the driveway yesterday and as I am still coughing a lot from COVID I will just let the snow/ice combo just melt on its own. The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 37/26 there was a trace of snow fall and just 5 minutes of sunshine. Officially there was 1’ of snow/ice on the ground. The overnight low here in my yard and the… Read more »
It is a cold 21 degrees right now at my place. I feel for the people that have no power. Still 711,000 customers in Michigan in the dark.
Just another great winter weekend on tap! Fresh snow, cold temps and great sports conditions! Get outside go skiing or snowshoeing, etc! Absolutely incredible!
