Cloud Cover Terminology

Some wonder when the Mets say it is going to be partly cloudy or partly sunny what it means exactly.  Here is the NWS terminology:

Partly Cloudy

Between 3/8 and 5/8 of the sky is covered by clouds.

Partly Sunny

Between 3/8 and 5/8 of the sky is covered by clouds. The term “Partly Sunny” is used only during daylight hours.

Mostly Clear

When the 1/8th to 2/8ths of the sky is covered by opaque (not transparent) clouds. Sometimes referred to as Mostly Sunny if this condition is present during daylight hours.

Mostly Cloudy

When the 6/8th to 7/8ths of the sky is covered by opaque (not transparent) clouds. Same as Considerable Cloudiness.

Next, here are our season snowfall totals thus far:

We currently have a temp of 19° at 7 am.  There is a chance of snow showers throughout the day with little or no accumulation.  There is a chance the clouds will break up later this afternoon.

NWS Discussion for storm potential this weekend:

- Trend toward higher potential for impacts Sat Night - Sun

Models are coming into better agreement with the coverage and
location of the snow with the next storm system for Sat Night into
Sunday. Overall the latest guidance is favoring accumulating snow
across much of the central and southern parts of the CWA. Highest
amounts are shown to be along and south of I-96. Impacts are
looking increasingly likely...with several inches of snow now
possible. This system could continue to trend upward from an
impact perspective with time as models are now starting to show
better FGEN and some Gulf moisture getting drawn into it. Based on
this we will increase POPs to likely or higher for these
locations and add a few inches of snow to the forecast.

I ran four models this morning – NAM, GEM, NAMNest and GFS, at this time they are all trying to guess four to six inches from I96 to the south.  We shall see…

The last two days were perfectly average temperature-wise in what’s been advertised as a “cold week.” Will have to keep an eye on the weekend’s system and whether it moves mainly to the south or not.
