Christmas Snow Outlook

We have a current temp of 19° at 5 am this morning which is a good temp for snow if we had the moisture and west-northwest wind in place, but we don’t so we remain snowless in southwest Michigan.  Long-range models are starting to pick up on a bit of snow for Christmas however, long-range guesses are iffy at best.  Even if we have very little snow this winter season it would be nice to have a couple of inches around for Christmas eve and Christmas just for the spirit of it all.  Below are the ECMWF, GFS and GEM forecast for snow up to Christmas Day.:

The Euro is showing near normal temps at the surface with an NW wind which would suggest a possible lake effect event.  It is also showing cold air poised to sweep into the Great Lakes.  Keep in mind these are long-range guesses and we shouldn’t put a whole lot of stock in them.

Near term, we will see cooler near-normal temps through the end of the week with a warming trend into the weekend.

It’s funny but I recall of number of posters and meteorologists pointing to a big “shift” mid December where we would get cold and snowy. The only shift I’m seeing is another warm up and no snow!

The total snow fall at Grand Rapids so far this winter season is just 0.4″ going back to 1900 there has only been one year that has gone this late without Grand Rapids having had at least 1″ of total snow fall and the winter season was 1998/99. Of course that winter season January had a record snow fall of 46.8″ but that and March with 14.2″ that winters snow season.

It looks like the official overnight low at Grand Rapids was 18 and that is the coldest low since March 7th The overnight low here at my house was 17 and the current temperature here is 22. Grand Rapids is still waiting of its first official 1’ of snow fall. If Grand Rapids has a green Christmas this year that would be the 3rd one in a row and in the recorded history of Grand Rapids that would be the first time that would have happened.
