Chances of Rain & Storms

Working outside the past couple days have been miserable at best.  I have been repairing a shed on my property replacing old wood which has involved use of a crow bar and other hand tools with a lot of grunting and unacceptable language.

Since my retirement I have been catching up on a lot of repair jobs and landscaping – this summer has been rough with the heat and humidity this month.

We have a 70 to 80% chance of rain and storms today which may give me a chance of a day off from working out in the elements – the rest of the week should be better with lower humidities and temps near 80° which will feel much better.  I will put the radar on the bottom of the post today in case storms develop, though we are not expected to experience anything severe today – wind will be the biggest concern especially on the big lake.

We are losing around 2 minutes of daylight each day now. As of yesterday, we have lost 44 minutes of daylight since the Summer Solstice.

I have been tweaking the site again, bring back the subtle blue colors – my wife says she didn’t like the dark mesh design which means most of you probably didn’t either but were to polite to discuss it.  She is my best critic as she has an eye for these things.

We had employee appreciation day at the Lugnuts game this afternoon. Made it until the 5th inning and then most of us took off before the rain started. Unfortunately, we did not get much rain at all. Most areas around us got a good soaking, though. I was hoping to get more, as it looks like the rest of the week will be pretty dry.

Well that wasn’t much rain. 0.12” on my PWS. Just enough to make the ground wet and make it feel even more humid.

Great summer so far! Only one minor heat wave and the rest of this summer looks near to below normal! Who would have thought!

Says the one who predicted a cooler than average July LOL Will 2019 end up being our 4th straight warm year in a row?

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

More fake news! Who knew?

Mookie
Mookie

GR is +3.2 for July and the coldest high temperature all month has been 79 degrees (twice). Slim will have to do some research to see if that’s a record for the least number of sub 80 days in July and the warmest minimum high temperature in July.

INDY
INDY

1 above normal month out of the last 6 what a stretch …INDY!

Slim

8 of the last 10 months have (will) been below average with December 2018 and now July 2019 being above average. We will have to see how August plays out.

Wow what a stretch of below normal temps! What a great pattern!

Keep the facts coming!

Slim

The record number of 80° days if any July at Grand Rapids is 30 set in 2012 and the coolest maximum that year was 79. The most we can get this year will be 29 IF that happens that would be a 3 year tie for 2nd most 80 or better days for the month of July. The other two years were 2011 and 2010. We will know by Thursday how this year will stack up.

Several locations in Lower Michigan hit 90 degrees once again yesterday!

INDY

GR has had I believe 7 90* degree day’s still below average for the summer not seeing anymore for Awhile …. INDY..

Barry in Zeeland

GR averages four 90 degree days a year, how is 7 less than 4??

Slim

The average number of 90° days here at Grand Rapids is around 9 per year. Each 30-year cycle will vary because there is a large spread of 90° days per year. Thus the 30-year average is 9 at GR and the 100 year average is 13. So this year with 7 in July that is above the 30 year average of 5 for July and the total of 7 for the year so far is less then the average for the last 30 years of 10.
Slim

Thanks Slim I thought 4 was a little off the charts …INDY

Barry in Zeeland

Yeah I meant 4 each year in July, but like you said it’s 5. Still confusing how 7 is less than 5?

Please let me know when we go above average for summer thank you ..INDY

Barry in Zeeland
Barry in Zeeland

Well, let’s ask Slim. I would guess that from the first day of Summer, June 21 or 22, till now, we are well above average so far. We’ll have to let the stats speak for that.

INDY

Losing 44 minutes of daylight sure shows it’s just about dark around 9pm now by the end of August the minutes will really add up love the fact Fall is just around the corner ..INDY

LOL it’s barely a month into summer and you’re talking fall. What spin…

Dark at 9 when the sun is still out? Not sure where you are, but sunset in GR is after 9.

Funny thing is only about 4 more months and we start gaining light in the evening already, first week of December. Seems to happen this way every year.

Barry in Zeeland

No doubt this past month has been miserable trying to do any work outside. The humidity just seems relentless. Even at 5 this morning it felt terrible, it just doesn’t cool down overnight. Double digits above normal for the low temps. Yuck.

Last week was not hot by no means especially up north few nights lows in the 40’s it was a perfect Summer week in late July..INDY..
