First up – another winter weather advisory for the counties along the lake shore and one county in. A burst of lake effect snow will move through the area from early this morning into this afternoon.
Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the morning commute. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected.
Mason, Lake, Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, Barry counties are in the advisory area for SW lower Michigan.
Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Crawford, Manistee and Wexford counties where additional snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected.
In the U.P. Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Baraga and Southern Houghton where additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected.
All the advisories run until 4pm this afternoon.

Looking ahead to the Christmas holiday I have embedded the CPC outlook maps below for that period. They show chances of below normal temperatures and above normal snowfall.
Here is a good time to post the differences between an outlook and a forecast. Unlike traditional weather forecasts, which consist of weather maps that predict exactly how much rain or snow may fall or the daily maximum temperature of an area, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center outlooks offer users forecasts of future weather conditions relative to what’s normal for their region.
Climate models are not predicting day to day weather systems. Instead, they are predicting climate averages especially when it comes to long range forecasts. The further out the models run the accuracy can become less exact so we have to take them with a grain of salt.

The GFS models on the forecast page are trying to show warming temperatures above freezing after this week with chances of both rain and snow – a sloppy mess up until the week of Christmas then the Arctic airmass breaks off once again the week of Christmas through the New Year holidays. Normal temperatures are just above freezing for this time of year so we may see a mixed bag as storm systems roll through the state.

The snow just keeps coming!! I am up to 12 inches of snow cover in my yard!!!! It looks like the long range snow models from a week and halk ago were right! These are the same maps that many people on here say are “NEVER correct”! Never say never baby! ROCK n ROLL will never die!

That map very well may result in multiple snowstorms! The average mean temperature that time if year is 25 degrees so a few days of 2 degrees above normal could mean a MONSTER SNOWSTORM is brewing! I love it!

It has been snowing heavily here this morning. Looks like a snow globe. Everyone have a great day & be careful on the roads they are looking a little slick.
There has been talk that this winter will not be like last winter. Well the latest European Monthlies came out last night and guess what? “who would have thought” they (the European) show a massive across the US warm up starting the second week of January. So maybe this winter might be similar to last winter cold and snow in December and mild in January. Also there looks to be a December thaw coming between now and Christmas.

As of yesterday Grand Rapids departure from average is -1.2° and so far this month( before todays snow) there has been 11.6” of snow fall. The official depth at the airport yesterday at 7 AM was 6” Here at my house (with the snow today included) 8.7”
