Friday night was a tough one for our friends down south especially in Kentucky where the toll keeps rising from long track tornadoes. More than 30 tornadoes were reported in at least six states, including Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi. A stretch of more than 250 miles from Arkansas to Kentucky might have been hit by one violent, long-track twister (which may turn out to be a record after NWS verification). My brother lives in eastern Tennesee and reports a large wall cloud moving south of where is lives, luckily he missed out on the storms. Below are the initial reports from the NWS office in Kentucky:
Our story for yesterday was the wind when the cold front blew through in the morning. Our high temp was 59° which dropped to the upper 30s before noon with some wet snow blowing horizontally – it couldn’t be measured though I suspect it didn’t amount to much more than a trace. An old tree fell across the fence on the north side of my property which I had to repair so the dogs wouldn’t escape when I let them out. Below are the recorded win gust from Yesterday:
Forecast Discussion
- No big storms this week, windy on Thursday Quiet weather pattern this week with mild temperatures. A low deepening surface low tracks west of Lower Michigan on Thursday but precipitation is limited as Gulf moisture is largely cut off from the circulation. The rapid deepening forecast by many ensemble members would result in a tight pressure gradient and strong isallobaric wind component, with wind profiles showing 35 to 40 knots in the mixing layer on Thursday as cold air advection is underway. So we will have to watch how this evolves with the potential for another wind event. The only other weather of note comes on Saturday as a northern stream shortwave trough moves through with a chance of light snow or mixed precip. Looks like this trough remains separate from the southern stream so precipitation will be light and surface temperatures appear marginal for any snow to cause travel
I am filling in for MV today but I do not have the knowledge as to how to bring the page up to the front. So if it you can not see the next post then just click on the “next post” above

Yesterdays official high of 58 at Grand Rapids was a tie for the 2nd warmest ever on any December 11th. The next week looks to be very warm by December standards and there is a chance we may set a record high on Wednesday. At this time Grand Rapids mean of 33.8 is +0.8° and the snow fall for December is now 3.4″ and that is -2.8″ for the month and total for the season of 13.1″ is now -0.5″ At Muskegon they have recorded just 0.9″ of snow fall for December that is -5.9″ and for the season their… Read more »
