Warm Air Returns (for Awhile)

A quiet weather pattern is setting up for the next couple days with warming temperatures and some sun making an appearance from time to time.  This will lull us into a false sense of security before the next storm system moves in bringing with it some snow.  Indications are we will see another Arctic outbreak around Groundhogs day.  I believe will will still see more lake effect snows rather than synoptic snow through early February which seems to be the theme of winter this season.

Breezy conditions are anticipated Friday and Saturday, especially near Lake Michigan. Snow showers may be moving back into western Lower Michigan Sunday into Monday with light accumulations possible especially near and west of US 131.

Gusts could easily top 30 mph at times starting near the lake Friday then moving inland as well Friday night into early Saturday. If we didn`t have a big inversion Friday the winds would be significantly higher given a core of 50 kt winds only 1k-1.5k ft off the ground. We mix deeper on Saturday though the LLJ core weakens a bit. Winds may nevertheless hold up through the day, 20-25 mph at times.

Colder air will be flowing across the lake Saturday night and especially Sunday behind the exiting cold front. We`re likely to see some lake effect snow develop early Sunday and continue into Tuesday. H8 temps fall from -12c Sunday morning to around -20c by early Tuesday.

Accumulating snow is quite possible as inversion heights rise to around 10k feet Sunday morning. There`s also some lift in the dgz, thanks to the upper trough moving through. Conditions will remain favorable for lake effect snow until Tuesday morning at which time the upper trough will move east, surface high pressure will move in, moisture will decrease, and boundary layer temperatures will rise. Another cold front will approach Wednesday and mixed rain and snow will change to light rain as precipitation develops in advance of the front. High temperatures will be closer to normal Sunday through Tuesday before warming into the 40s by Wednesday.
