Sunny & Mild

We ended up with .02 of an inch of rain yesterday bringing us to .12 for the month of March.  If we set any records for the month it will be in the sunshine category with more to come.  Another record may be the lack of rain and snow.  I hate to jinx anything but I don’t see any more snow for March.

With high pressure moving into the state the winds will calm down and we will settle into a mild sunny weekend.  Here are is a list of the recorded wind speeds from yesterday:

Sunny skies and very dry air will be with us today and through the weekend. A number of local fire authorities have instituted burn bans as the potential for wildfires is increasing. The first 18 days of March have been among the top 20 warmest and top 10 driest in 120 years of records at Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon.  Humidity levels will be only 20 to 30%.

Forecast Discussion

- Dry with moderating temperatures into early next week

Guidance continues to show a big area of high pressure crossing
the Great Lakes Region today through Saturday. The system sets up
over New England Sunday into Monday. The subsidence associated
with this system will keep our weather dry through then. Afternoon
humidity levels will drop below 30 percent each day through the
weekend. We will see the fire danger risk increasing Sunday and
possibly into Monday as southerly winds strengthen on the
backside of the departing high pressure system and afternoon
temperatures rise into the 60s. The moisture will try to increase
Monday as the next next low pressure system starts to approach
the region. There is some uncertainty as to how quickly the
moisture increases early next week. If the High Res Euro is
right...any low level moistening will be delayed til at least Tuesday

- Potential for rain by mid week

Moisture is forecasted to increase mainly Tuesday into Wednesday
as a slow moving mid level low tries to track in from the
southwest. Models are showing some spread on the timing and
strength of this system. They are in agreement that we will be on
the warm side of this initial low. Given the height falls and
moisture advection during this period...we will continue to
feature increasing POPs during this window.

So far this March Grand Rapids has officially recorded 0.06″ of precipitation and just a trace of snow fall. At Muskegon they have reported 0.15″ of precipitation and 0.1″ of snow fall. At Lansing the numbers are 0.10 and a trace. Here at my house I have recorded 0.11″ of precipitation and a trace of snow. The record low amounts are at Grand Rapids 0.08″ precipitation in 1910 there was no snow fall recorded in 1910 and a trace in 1945 and then .2″ in 1908. At Muskegon there was no snow fall recorded in March of 1927 and 1929.… Read more »

We are averaging 76% of sunshine in March so far! And zero snow. And very mild temps. If this is a “back loaded winter,” sign me up every year.

It has been quite an incredible month with the high amount of sunshine and complete lack of rain and snow. Throw in the very mild temps, it’s been one for the record books. Last day of Winter today, still waiting on that promised “Back Loader” Winter that was posted hundreds of times.

We have had some serious fires in the area lately – a pallet company on the west side of Lansing yesterday and a brush fire near Dansville that burned nearly 60 acres. We need rain badly. In the meantime, we will be enjoying the outside this weekend. No bonfires, or course.

There could be a lot of fires until the green up.
