Snow Changes to Rain then Cold

We have three inches of wet sloppy snow on the ground this morning and a mix of rain and snow around the area.  Temp is 33° at 6 am.  Warmer air surging into Southwest Michigan will bring temperatures to near 40° by midday. This will change snow showers to rain showers across the entire area by mid to late morning. However, a strong cold front comes through this evening and that will bring with it snow showers. Tonight there will be snow showers by the lakeshore and lows will fall to near 10°!  So, any snow you have left unshoveled will flash freeze into a glacier.

The snow over this area will end as light rain before moving totally out of the area by late this morning. After 8 am snowfall is expected to be less than an inch over the I-69 area. Rain showers will move back into the area by midafternoon. Those will change to snow showers this evening as a strong cold front comes through the area.

Yesterday we had a high of 33° and a low of 25°.  We are at 12.3 inches of snow for the month and 43.3 inches for the season which is above the past two winters but below our normal.

It appears we should remain cold through the first part of next week, after that, an interesting pattern may take shape bringing rain and snow into the area.

Forecast Discussion

...Snow winding down this morning, warmer today...

Strong isentropic lift in the warm advection pattern of a mid
latitude cyclone near Lake Superior has resulted in a brief period
of moderate to heavy snow over the cwa this morning. Radar shows a
wide swath of echos aoa 30 dbz and visibilities have fallen to a
half mile in some locations. A quick couple of inches of snow is
expected prior to the snow diminishing and transitioning to drizzle
around sunrise. Temperatures will rise to around 40 across the cwa
today but the mild weather won`t last.

...Much colder tonight and Saturday...

The Lake Superior low will drag a cold front through as it moves
east to Ontario tonight. There will be a strong punch of Arctic air
with the front beginning around 00z. H8 temps will fall from -6c at
00z to -20c by 12z. Melting snow from today`s mild temperatures will
quickly freeze tonight. Temperatures won`t move much from tonight`s
lows in the teens as we go through Saturday. Highs will be near 10
along US-10 and near 20 south of I-94.

In addition to the cold temperatures tonight, lake effect snow is
expected to hug the lake shore where 3 to 6 inches are possible
through Sunday.

...Light snow Monday, then a warm up, then more snow ...

Another clipper will traverse across the northern Great Lakes Monday
spreading light snow to areas mainly north of I-96 where an inch or
two may accumulate. The middle to end of the week is shaping up to
be rather interesting. Both the ECMWF and GFS drop a cold front
south across central Lower on Thursday. Ahead of the front,
temperatures should warm into the mid 40s Wednesday. Both also
develop a deep low on the southern end of the front over the
Southern Plains. The low then rides northeast along the frontal
boundary and across the cwa. Both the ECMWF and GFS qpf ensembles
have increased qpf with this system; ensemble means around an inch
now. And both models have trended upward with regards to snow in
Grand Rapids. Ensemble means are around 5 inches. However, a couple
ensemble members are much more than that.

This may end up being a system that produces quite a bit of rain
across the southeast cwa and quite a bit of snow over the northern
cwa by Friday.

Roads have cleared here. Many traffic accidents this morning in this area. Usually by February, Michiganders have remembered how to drive in this weather. Apparently not.

Not weather-related, but I finally finished watching the documentary, The Beatles: Get Back on Disney+. It was fantastic. It is nearly eight hours long. It is a must-see for any Beatles fan. The four lads were so unbelievably talented and watch them work was amazing.

If you’re excited about wet slushy snow before 40 degrees and rain on top, then I’m not sure what to tell you LOL These are the types of spring snows that are utterly useless because they serve no recreational purpose.

WOOD now has back to back mid 40’s next week! If current forecasts hold, this weekend will be as cold as it gets around here for probably 10 months or more.

The system next week bears close watching. There could definitely be significant rain and significant snow depending where the track goes. Right now the system kind of splits the viewing area in half. As the NWS said could be a system where part of our area gets significant rain and the other half snow. Should be interesting to see how this one plays itself out.

Yes this could be a big daddy of a storm with several inches of more snow for GR …Stsy tuned….InDzy
