Partly Sunny Today

Yesterday we started the day at 18° but with the clearing in the morning the sun made its grand appearance which lasted through the whole day – what a great way to start the New Year.  Once again warmer than normal temps will permeate the area with highs in the low to mid 40s, it will be warmer the further south you go.

We have no major weather events to get excited about over the next several days.  Our upper air pattern essentially remains zonal with no Arctic outbreaks.  There are a few minor rain/snow events, the first tonight with some light rain or drizzle mainly south of Grand Rapids – the next coming Saturday with rain and snow and finally a clipper which may give us some snow on Sunday though not much accumulations if any.  Temps will remain above normal through the weekend.

Our ever changing CPC forecast now have us with chances of above normal temps over the next couple weeks with chances of above normal precipitation.

The top bullet point in this morning’s forecast discussion:

– No significant systems to affect the area the next 7 days

Nice day today. Lots of melting going on- hard to believe it is winter. I am sure glad to see us starting to gain on the daylight hours. I really don’t like it getting dark so early. Grandkids went sledding by the water tower on New Years Day. Lots of fun!! Yummy hot chocolate to warm us up.

All of the warm weather fanatics can fantasize about the so called no winter and I will be playing in the beautiful white stuff up in snow country this weekend! I can hardly wait! Who would have thought? It will be fun when we are seeing snow storm after snow storm later this winter and end up with above normal again! Incredible!

Not fantasizing it, living it. We just had one of our warmer December’s ever.

Two weeks ago, Australia had its hottest day ever. The entire continent averaged 103 for a high temperature. That’s crazy.

Yeah, they are not having a fun time down there between the insane heat and half the continent burning away.

The southern snow is trending north towards GR and snow country is looking awesome! Who knew?

An inch of snow or less for most of Lower Michigan for the next 5 days is awesome? We finally agree!

Despite the incessant warm weather hype, snow country is in great shape and plenty of snow on the way! Incredible!

Basically no snow for GR for the next 16 days! I love that map! And we all know those totals are usually inflated…

Latest CFS models now show warmth for the entire month of January and then a cold snap to start February.

Great because that won’t happen! The CFS is out to lunch as usual!

CPC says the same thing!

Gee the GFS is now hinting at maybe reaching 59 with rain on the 15th of January. Boy it sure looks like January 2020 will be the 2nd warm month in a row. At this time it is 46 here with clear skies.

My son’s hockey team was supposed to play an outdoor game Saturday in Detroit. We just heard that it has been canceled. Bummer. The kids were excited to play outside.

The warm ground and the sun today has melted pretty much all of our snow.

Slim

Last year GR had 31 days in a row of above average temperatures at the end of December and into January. This year we are now at 14 days in a row of above average temperatures. At this time it is 44 here with sunshine. There still is snow on the ground but that will not last too long with the temperatures in the mid 40’s and sunny.

Still amazing how closely we are following last years pattern. Minor differences here and there, but overall a close to a carbon copy as you can get with the weather.

What happened to all the talk of a cold and snowy January? Hasn’t Indy been promising us a big arctic outbreak and snowstorm around January 5th for weeks on end? Even Bill Steffen said things were turning real cold and snowy after the first week of January. Whoops!

Yeah that tends to happen when you make wild unsubstantiated claims with regards to the weather more than a few days out, you’re left eating crow in the dark. Reminds me of the Lions, every year we hear how good they will be and how improved they are, and then nothing. Who knows, maybe it turns colder at some point, or maybe we just stay stuck in this pattern that’s been holding on for months now. Gotta love mid 40’s and sun in January!

Slim

I have not issue with Rocky and Indy posting their opinions on this site. As for any long range guess that is with it is a guess. I am not sure why some models issue the snow fall maps that they do and history will tell you that the snow fall amounts they “forecast” just do not happen. The pattern we are has produced very mild conditions in the eastern US and I would think that will continue for some time until the patter changes (usually in 30 to 45 days) it should be noted that we could stay in… Read more »

Sounds like the perfect forecast heading into January, upper air pattern remaining zonal, no major weather events or Arctic outbreaks, and weeks on end with above normal temps. October, November, and December all coming in well below normal snow, and now January starting out the same way as we approach the mid point of Winter. Could this last the whole season?

Rocky (Rockford)

It will be another great weekend of skiing up at Nubs Nob! Plenty of fresh snow and great weather! Great year up there so far! Downstate the rock n roll party will start soon.

Mookie

Hard pass on that! Temps have been above freezing for practically 2.5 weeks in Petoskey. Hitting the 40’s today. Even supposed “snow country” will be relying on fake man-made snow this weekend which is awful to ski on. Count me out!

CPC keep us very mild in January and WOOD says no major snow in sight. I love it! Look for a lot more melting today.
