Last night we had a compact low-pressure center move through. This is only the second time I have ever seen such a thing. It was an unexpected surprise for most of us but a welcome one as it delivered some needed rain for southwest Michigan. We had thunderstorm watches and warnings pop up along with a tornado warning. Law enforcement reported a funnel in southeastern Allegan County between Otsego and Cooper though there wasn’t any radar indication from what I could see. We received .98 of an inch of rain in Otsego from the storm, bringing us to 1.99 inches for the month.
Heat Advisory
We have a heat advisory beginning at noon which will last through Friday. We will see temperatures in the 90s with heat indices around 100° due to the high humidity. This is not much fun unless you are a tropical plant.

Weather History
1975: A tornado struck two miles northeast of Newaygo. A tree fell on and killed a 14-year-old girl who was camping with her parents. Tornadoes also hit Roscommon County, where damage was done to some boats on the southwest shore of Houghton Lake. Another tornado damaged several farm buildings north of Zeeland in Ottawa County.
1992: Over a dozen, mostly weak tornadoes struck across Lower Michigan, including south of Coopersville in Ottawa County, near Cedar Springs in Kent County, Harrison in Clare County, and Pewamo in Ionia County.
On June 17, 2009, three to six inches of rain fell in and around the I 69 corridor during the daytime hours including 3.46 inches at Flint. That made it the 2nd wettest June day and 9th wettest day all time for Flint. This amount of rain, coupled with the wet spring, led to flooding across a few counties. Road closures and basement flooding were common.
On June 17, 1992, 10 tornadoes touched down in Southeast Lower Michigan as a squall line ripped across the region. All of the tornadoes were rated F0 and F1. Temperatures ahead of the squall line soared into the 90s which was one of only three such days during the cold summer of 1992.
Also on this date in 1935, the record for the greatest amount of precipitation for the month of June in Saginaw was reached, with a rainfall estimate of 2.98 inches.
Forecast Discussion
- Heat Advisory For Most Of Our Area Today - Friday It will be hot and humid today and again on Tuesday with persistent southerly flow waa and as h8 temps moderate to 20 C. This in conjunction with the amplifying upper ridge over the eastern CONUS as h5 heights reach around 590 dM over our area will result in high temps reaching into the lower to perhaps middle 90s today and tomorrow. This combined with dew pt values in the upper 60s to lower 70s will result in heat indices reaching around 100 this afternoon and early evening and again tomorrow. We have decided to issue a heat advisory for most of our area as a result. Thx for extensive coord on headline decisions DTX/IWX/APX. - A Few Showers and Storms Today Rain and thunderstorms are still in progress early this morning over our se fcst area tied to the mcv that is moving slowly east across that area. Severe wx potential has subsided overnight but there is still potential for localized flooding given slow movement of this precipitation across the same areas. We expect pcpn to taper off over our se fcst area toward daybreak with mostly dry conditions from mid to late morning into the afternoon. A few showers and convection will likely redevelop this afternoon with instability from daytime heating and perhaps in the vicinity of boundaries from this early morning activity. - Heat and Humidity Continue Through Mid to Lake Week Heat and humidity look to continue mid to late week and likely into Saturday as well. The upper level ridge actually builds into the Southern Great Lakes mid to late week with 590+ dm 500mb heights. 850mb temperatures are not overly warm, but are largely in the +18C to around +20C range. These values should push surface high temperatures to around 90 or into the lower 90s from Wednesday through Saturday. Surface dew points in the upper 60s to around 70 should push heat index values towards 100 at times through the Wednesday through Saturday time frame. Heat Advisory looks good at least through Friday. A prolonged heat event for sure. - Small Chances for Precipitation Mid Week There are small chances that we may see some shower and thunderstorm activity spill into the forecast area at times, with the best of those chances being Wednesday night into Thursday. It is this time frame that a boundary sags into the area from the north. Both the operational GFS and ECMWF show some activity making inroads into the region. Do not think this will be an all day all night type of event though and feel the headlines are still warranted this far out. Could see the stout ridge winning out though and the better bet is we will likely stay dry. - Cooler Weather Behind a Cold Front Next Sunday The heat at humidity that really began yesterday (Sat the 16th) will likely stretch all the way to Saturday the 22nd. It is not until Sunday when a pattern change occurs with an upper low pushing into the Great Lakes along with a surface cold front. Models are fairly consistent that the cold front will move through on Sunday. Sunday night lows dip back into the 50s in parts of the area.
The temp increased 34 degrees in six hours. That’s just wild.
We just had ice cream… I said this isn’t even cooling me off. Calling family in Florida…they can have this back!!!
My brother is coming home for a visit this week. He lives in the Phoenix area and they dealt this heat the past couple of weeks and it’s finally made it here. I told him the same thing – he can keep this stuff.
Amen to that lol
GR is up to 93 degrees
It’s just as we predicted in October, warm, mostly snowless winter and a hot summer coming! Cold weather crazies refused to listen and stuck with their delusions! Already have our first heatwave and it’s not even summer yet! WOW, wow, wow, wow!!!!!
91 degrees with a heat index of 99 degrees before 1pm. Phew!!
We went to tht basement when tht tornado warning alerted us… This seems to be a year of unexpected…
It will be a good weekend get some stuff done in the ax this week!!!
Thanks for the heads up Michael I have some tropical plants I need to get outside …been eating for the darn caterpillars to disappear!!
Blowtorch warning! I remember entire years without a 90 degree day. And it’s not even officially summer yet.
Hopefully, you received some good rain last night because the plants are going to need it this week.
To jog your memory there have only been two years that have not reached 90 or better at Grand Rapids. There have been 4 years with just one and six years with 2. At Lansing there have been 5 years with no 90° days 5 with 1 and 5 with 2. For June at Grand Rapids there indeed have been many years with no days of 90 or better with 37 years.

Who in their right mind would root for 90’s with high dew points? Who in their right mind would root for global warming and be ignorant enough to think global warming is not the biggest threat in the World today? Incredible but there are millions of ignorant people in our presence, so it best to ignore their ridiculous conspiracy theories! WOW, just wow, WOW!!!
Thanks to global warming, Michigan is becoming an even nicer state to live in!
Pathetic statement!
Get a life! There is NOTHING good about global warming! Ignorant comments! Wow!
Global warming is a beautiful natural phenomenon! And actually we are still in the end stages of the last ice age. So welcome the warmth!

While there was rain to the south and north of Grand Rapids yesterday it missed the GR area official just a trace and here in MBY I recorded just 0.03” The overnight low here was a warm 71.

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 88/62 there was just a trace of rainfall. The highest wind gust was 32 MPH out of the SE. There was 60% of sunshine. For today the average H/L is 80/59 the record high of 95 was set in 1992 and 1994 (note 1992 was the so called year without a summer) The coldest maximum was just 54 in 1974. The record low of 40 was set in 1980 the warmest low of 73 was set in 1957. The most rainfall of 2.01” fell in 1996.

All the rain missed us too. If we don’t get lucky with popups during this heat, things will be looking crispy soon.
We finally got some much needed rain. It rained moderately to heavily from 2a – 5:30a. Area rain gauges reported 2-4” of rainfall throughout the Lansing area.
.6 in my gauge east of Hamilton over the last 12 hours. Gusty winds, but no hail.
