Great Weekend Ahead

Yesterday we had a high of 84° and a low of 61°.  Sunrise today is 6:14 and the sun sets at 9:23 pm, we lose one minute and two seconds of daylight from yesterday.

Partly sunny skies along with scattered showers and thunderstorms are predicted for today. High temperatures will end up mainly in the upper 70s to lower 80s.  Chances of rain in SW Michigan are less than 50%.  Dry weather with plenty of sunshine is expected for the weekend, with comfortable temps near 80° and low humidity.

Forecast Discussion

- Heavy Rain Slips By to Our South Today -

An ongoing MCS currently tracking through southern Iowa and northern
Missouri will continue to move east towards northern Ohio just south
of the Michigan state boarder. While some showers are possible on
the northern flank of the MCS south of the I-94 corridor, the
bulk of the heavy rain is expected to stay to our south. SPC keeps
just about all of southwest lower MI out of the General Thunder
category, but we can`t rule out a stray storm or two given the few
hundred J/kg of instability, 20-30kt shear, and weak low-level
lapse rates.

- Beautiful Weekend Ahead -

Rain is quickly shunted to the south late tonight into Saturday
as high pressure centered over northern Lake Superior spreads
south. This high pressure will hold strong through the entire
weekend allowing for nearly pristine weekend weather. High
temperatures will likely stay limited to the upper 70s to low 80s
thanks to a thermal trough with an 850mb temps hovering in the
11-14C range. Altogether, a dry, mostly sunny, and pleasant summer
weekend is expected.

- Monday/Tuesday Storm Chances -

Late Sunday into Monday our weekend ridge will flatten as a series
of shortwave troughs drop east into the region. Moisture could be a
big limiting factor with this system, but decent upper level support
could support storms across central and northern lower MI. Certainly
still many evolving forecast uncertainties to evaluate the next few
days though.

Skunked on rain again. The radar lit up just a few miles South then went marching away from us. Suns out again and humid as heck. Can’t wait for some drier air.

Bummer. We lucked out today with several rounds of showers.

A cell popped up overhead and didn’t move for about a half hour. A nice, welcomed shower.

Just took the dog for a walk. Pretty muggy again this morning. The weekend looks fantastic. Other than the lack of rain, this summer has been pretty great so far.

I am in the moderate drought area posted by the US drought monitor. Non-irrigated fields are browning and most are stressed. Personally, this is the driest my yard has ever been, even worse than last spring. Most likely due to the dry and hot days we have had the past month. We recorded about ~.6 inches in June and the last “storm” that came through last weekend we got ~0.2. The trend has continued of most storms just sliding south.

Off the topic of weather but my dads friend got a trail camera photo from up in Otsego County northeast of Gaylord of what looks to possibly be a black wolf. Can’t confirm that it is but it’s looks to have very tall legs. Certainly interesting. Wolves would be very rare in northern Lower Mi but not unheard of. More common especially in the western UP.

The nice summer weather continues. We had a decent number of hot days in June but so far July has been pretty comfortable. Of course we are far from over with the warm season… I’m sure we will get more 90+ days soon enough.

It’s been a great summer. Just wish it would thunder a little more.

The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 83/60 there was no rain and just 25% of possible sunshine. For the month of July there now has officially been 1.05” of rain fall for the year there has been 20.86” of rain/melted snow fall. The overnight low in MBY was 67. And at this time it is 68. The record high for today is 101 set in 1936 and the record low is 46 set in 1984. In looking ahead it looks like we will continue with rather typical summer weather with highs in mostly in the low 80’s with… Read more »
