It looks like we are in for a cold Easter weekend so I thought I would look to see what some of the records are for both March 31st and April 1st\
Also April Fools Day!!!!
At Grand Rapids on March 31st the average H/L is 51/32 the record high is 78° set in 2010 the coldest maximum is a cold 20° set in 1923 the record low is also in 1920 at a bone chilling +6° the most snow fall is 3.7” in 1951. The last time there was more than a trace of snow was in 1991 (0.4”) the last time there was one inch or more was in 1975 with 2”
For April 1st the average H/L is 52/32 the record high is 82 in 2010 the recorded coldest maximum is 29 in 1911. The record low is 13 in 1954 the most snow fall is 4.8” in 1972 The last time more than a trace fell was in 2002 when 0.9” fell there was a trace in 2016, 2013, 2009 and 2007. The last time more than 1” fell was in 1993 when 2.8” fell and there was a reported 1” on the ground.
The NWS may also have this or something similar for Easter but here is some weather history at Grand Rapids that has happened on Easter Sunday. Remember that Easter can fall anywhere from March 22nd to April 25th The last time it fell on March 22nd was in 1818 and it will not fall on March 22nd again until 2285. As for April 25th, the last year Easter fell that late was in 1943 and will not be that late again until 2038. Next year Easter is on April 1st

2. 1.05 inches on April 12, 1903

And last but not least the snowiest
1. 2.5 inches on April 4, 1920
2. 2.3 inches on March 30, 1975
3. 1.2 inches on April 7, 1996
Last year Easter was on April 16th and here in Grand Rapids the high was a very pleasant 70° and the low for the date was 51° There was 0.04” of rain fall.

Now that we are heading towards April and the second month of meteorological spring let’s take a quick look at some averages and records for the spring season here at Grand Rapids.
The average mean temp for the meteorological spring months here is GR is 47.4°
The warmest was 54.1° set not that long ago in 2012
The coldest was 41.7° way back in 1890
The average amount of precipitation for spring here is 9.70”N
The wettest was 19.37” in 1976
The driest was 3.54” way back in 1887
As for snow fall the average spring sees 10.1” of snow here
The most snow for a “spring” was 41.4” set in 1965
The least amount of snow fall was just a trace in 1945
Now for the sun lovers the average spring sees 52.7% of possible sunshine.
In 1958 we seen the sun 65.4% of the possible time
While in 1980 it was only 35.6%

What’s incredible has been our lack of any blizzards or significant snow storms for many years now. Another lackluster Winter snow wise, and yet another below normal snowfall. If you ask me, these temps have been perfect. Once it gets over 65 to 70 degrees out, it is too warm to do anything strenuous outside like cutting trees down.
Yep the temps and zero snow have been fine with me!! Been able to get tons of work done outdoors!
It is definitely an incredible cold snap! It sure is not incredible to have a winter with normal snowfall! On the contrary! Who knew?

The snow for next week looks to stay well to the north of central lower Michigan but back in 1975 when I lived in Bay City that was not the case. The storm started just after sunset on Wednesday April 2nd 1975. The second was a cold and windy day with the high for the day a just 33° with a NE wind. Here are some of the latest seasonal snow fall totals from some locations in Michigan as of this morning. Grand Rapids 71.7”, Muskegon 97.8” Lansing 50.6”, Detroit 58.6” Flint 77.4”, Saginaw 35.9” (note Saginaw is just 48 miles north of Flint) Alpena 50.3” Houghton Lake 40.4”, Sault Ste Marie 95.0” Gaylord 103.4” Traverse City 96.3”. West Branch 32.2” , Petoskey 107.4”, Marquette 135.1” Munising a reported 178.1” the range with the above locations is between a low of 32.2” at West Branch to a high of 178.1” at Munising.
