Garden & Earwigs

I ate the first cherry tomatoes out of my garden last night.  The cucumbers, banana peppers, and green onions have been producing well and taste delicious.  The larger tomatoes are coming on well but are still green.  I never liked fried green tomatoes.  I also have bell peppers coming on, along with several varieties of gourds.

This year we have a lot of earwigs or what we like to call squiggly or pincer bugs.  If you pick up a rock, log, or misplaced towel off the ground, you will likely see a mass of them.  They are brown and have what looks like pincers on their backside.  In addition to not crawling into peoples’ ears at night, earwigs do not spread diseases. However, some species produce a foul-smelling liquid as a self-defense mechanism, and their menacing appearance can be alarming to homeowners. In any case, earwigs pose a greater threat to garden plants, rather than people.

Weather History

1953: Severe thunderstorms struck during the late evening as a cold front moved through. High winds downed numerous trees, and several streets in Grand Rapids were blocked by falling trees.

On July 22, 1960, Detroit experienced its highest official wind gust during a severe thunderstorm of 104 mph wind at 5:18 pm.

Forecast Discussion

- Scattered storms this afternoon/Tuesday

A short wave moving through the upper trough over Michigan will
kick off scattered storms this afternoon. Dewpoints in the mid 60s
and temperatures in the lower 80s will produce enough SBCAPE for
storm generation. However, weak wind shear will render the storms
non severe. The weak wind flow will, however, contribute to a
heavy rain potential wherever the storms develop. The Nam 3km
suggests that the lake breeze convergence zone will be a focus for
scattered convective development; other models point toward more
inland...east of US-131. Either way, given the southern cwa
location of the shortwave, more of the cwa will be in play for
storms this afternoon versus Sunday.

Any storms that develop this afternoon will dissipate toward
sunset leading to a partly cloudy night.

Showers/storms will again be in play Tuesday as low pressure in
concert with the upper trough moves eastward across northern
Lower. The northwest cwa will have the highest chance of seeing
precipitation Tuesday. Weak wind shear less than 20 kts will
result in the storms be non severe.

- Rain/Strong Thunderstorms on Wednesday

A shortwave trough axis moves across the Great Lakes on Wednesday.
Moisture pooling ahead of a surface cold front will result in
precipitable water values around 1.5 inches early Wednesday.
Coverage of showers and thunderstorms should see a diurnal increase
Wednesday afternoon along and ahead of the cold front.

Model soundings for Wednesday afternoon also show some potential for
strong storms with deep layer shear of 30 knots and sfc-based
instability present with greater than 1000 J/kg of CAPE...so we will
continue to watch how this evolves. At this point it looks like the
best chance for strong storms and excessive rainfall will be across
the southeast forecast area. Expect drying behind the front with
sfc and upper ridging bringing fair weather for Thursday into the
weekend.

In my garden I have already eaten cucumbers, have had many cherry tomatoes and so far two good sized tomatoes. I planted two patches of cucumber three weeks apart my 1st planting are producing them now and the later planting should be in a week or so. I am always amazed on how fast they grow.
