Nice Weather Continues

High pressure will continue to meander its way toward the state today and on through the weekend bringing sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80°.  Nighttime temperatures will be chilly, with lows in the 50s to near 60˜.  We have a cool 51° at 5:30 this morning.  Yesterday’s high was 75° and the low was 54°.

Weather History

1894: Temperatures reach 100 degrees across much of Michigan for the second day in a row. At Lansing, the high of 102 degrees ties the record for the all-time hottest temperature.

2009: Cool and unstable air over Lake Michigan spawns at least two waterspouts. One of the waterspouts moves inland near Holland, just north of Lake Macatawa, but quickly dissipates and causes no damage.

On July 19, 2020, several rounds of storms moved through the region, spreading from the Tri-Cities area during the morning to the Metro Detroit area by afternoon. These storms caused numerous instances of wind damage throughout the day as well as heavy localized rainfall. The storms resulted in large trees on mobile homes, damage to structures at Willow Run airport, and an overturned semi-truck near Ypsilanti. Over 100,000 customers lost power due to the storms.

On July 19, 1996, a severe thunderstorm came through Flint producing 58 mph winds in the early morning hours.

Forecast Discussion

- Sunny today

Latest ir loop shows a dearth of clouds extending from Maine west
to the Missouri Valley. High pressure at the surface with an upper
trough to the east will result in abundant sunshine today. We`ll
see highs near 80 and low humidity due to dewpoints in the 50s.

Clear skies and light winds tonight will send temperatures down
into the 50s again. The surface high will remain in place
Saturday, but an upper trough aloft will bring in a few more
afternoon clouds; dry weather is expected.

- Quiet Weather Weekend, Chance of rain increases after Tuesday

Flow regime across the CONUS is dominated by eastern longwave trough
and western upper high/ridging into next week. Surface anticyclone
of Canadian origin persists over the weekend with low humidity and
offers several days of sunshine for saturated ground to dry out.

Good model agreement adds confidence to the forecast of a shortwave
trough diving southeast from Canada and cutting off across the Great
Lakes by Wednesday and this will bring the next chance of showers
and thunderstorms for mid-week. GFS soundings show some potential
for strong storms Wednesday afternoon with deep layer shear of 30
knots and sfc-based instability, so we will watch how this
evolves.
