Yes, it is that time off year when zucchini suddenly appear on your doorstep left unaware during the night like some poor orphaned puppies looking for a home. Most of the time they appear as litters in bags or the lone poor soul shivering in the cold looking for attention. They seem to breed prolifically this time of year and are seen running rampantly everywhere – you just can’t seem to get rid of them. The same goes for pickles and cucumbers as we seem to have way to many of them. I suppose a good place to send the ‘spares’ would be Christian Neighbors, or other food distribution centers and pantries for the needy people who could use them. Another place is your local farmers markets where you could sell them or give them away for free to good homes.
Luckily for the inventive homemaker there are many ways to deal with these things. I love zucchini bread and cookies but I am not one to eat them raw or fried alone but I can eat them in a stir fry mixed in with other good things. I have always been one to wonder why people grow so many of the darned things. I like to grow vegetables as much as other gardeners but I only grow what I am going to use in the immediate family. I mainly grow tomatoes, peppers, onions and sometimes potatoes – for me there is nothing better than a home grown tomato. My tomato plants are doing really well this year, I love the meatier varieties most like Romas.
Weather wise we have a great stretch of weather coming for the next few days. Weather across West Michigan the next few nights looks favorable for viewing the Perseid Meteor Shower. This meteor shower usually produces 50-100 meteors per hour at its peak, making it one of the best meteor showers to try and catch. Best viewing is between midnight and daybreak.
There is a low chance for a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon and evening mainly near and east of US 127, but most locations will stay dry. High temperatures will reach the low to mid 80s. Our best chances for rain come Wednesday into Thursday with a cold front and the development of a low pressure systems coming out of Missouri. At this point it appears we could have a quarter to an inch of rain this coming week

I made my favorite zucchini casserole last week. You layer zucchini, tomatoes, and Velveeta cheese and bake. Yummy. You have to love this time of year when all of our garden vegetables are ready for picking or you go to your favorite farmer’s market.
I heard we could possibly see 90 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Stay cool.
Michael… I just graded about 3 zucchinis to freeze to bake with this winter!!!
Another great summer day! Still no 90’s!
88 degrees here, another hot day. I thought we were done with the days around 90??
There looks t be a chance coming. There is a good chance we will see some much cooler air before the end of August. Not sure how long it will last but it is coming. It is also 88 here at this time.

Bring in Fall INDY is ready! INDY!
Saw 25 meteors and a few fireballs last night! We are now at 11 warm days in a row and counting!
Williston, North Dakota, hit 105° yesterday and Bismarck hit 100° so far this year both locations have reached 100° or better twice. For Bismarck they have had 21 days of 90 or better this summer. Their record for 90 or better is 53 in 1936 with 47 in 2nd place in 1988 and for 100 or better their record is 14 in 1936 with 12 the 2nd spot in 1988. BTW our record here in Grand Rapids is 6 in 1936 with 5 in 1934 in 2nd place. The last time GR had 2 was in the hot summer of 2012.
