Another sunny day is in store with temperatures continuing to warm up. Enjoy them because the climate is going to turn for the weekend giving us a good taste of fall. We will see sunny skies today and tomorrow with temperatures in the low 80s today and the mid-80s tomorrow. We have a chance of showers Thursday night into Friday as temperatures cool into the low 70s Friday and into the 60s for Saturday and Sunday.
Weather History
1965: A tornado struck east of Grand Haven, destroying a barn, silo and factory. Debris was carried over two miles.
2008: The remnants of Hurricane Gustav brought heavy rains to southern Lower Michigan. Muskegon sets a daily rainfall record of 3.25 inches and Grand Rapids sets a record with 2.82 inches.
On September 4, 1973, the Detroit daytime temperature rose to 92 degrees, which is the record high temperature for the day. The very next year, in 1974, the overnight temperature dropped to 40 degrees, which is the record low temperature for this day!
NWS Forecast
NWS Forecast
- Dry Until Later Thursday In most respects, today will be pretty similar to yesterday. High pressure and ridging, combined with a dry profile, will keep little to no cloud cover across the area. Light southerly winds are expected with a weak lake breeze changing winds to westerly near the lakeshore this afternoon. It`ll be a bit warmer, near 80, thanks to warm air advection bringing 850mb temps into the mid teens. Clouds increase later Thursday as a trough and associated surface cold front approach. The cold front will bring the potential for showers and a few storms towards the Manistee National Forest area in the afternoon. However, the better frontal and mid-level forcing arrives more towards Thursday night. CAMs also show the potential for an isolated shower developing across the rest of the CWA in the afternoon triggered by a 700mb shortwave. Given the lack of low- level moisture confidence is to low to add PoPs for this possibility. - Scattered showers/storms Thursday night and Friday Sfc cold front preceding the approaching/digging upper trough moves through on Thursday night into early Friday and brings a band of showers and a few storms through the area. Current guidance suggests rain amounts of only about a tenth to quarter inch and not much of severe weather risk given nighttime frontal passage and lack of instability. There may however be another band of convection which forms on the leading edge of the initial/lead H5 shortwave approaching from the northwest later Friday into Friday evening, especially if we see some sunshine preceding that feature. - Cool, breezy weekend with a few showers The upper trough continues to deepen/amplify overhead on Friday night and Saturday and the upper jet core is shown to eventually dive south of MI. With Delta Ts of 20C, would expect to see considerable clouds and scattered to numerous showers during this time frame, although northerly flow regime may tend to limit the showers to the coastal counties. Lake induced capes of 1000-1500 J/KG may support a thunder risk and a few waterspouts as well. Wind gusts to 30 mph expected within brisk cyclonic low level flow. Not a whole lot of improvement on Sunday with the upper low still in the vicinity of Lake Huron. There should still be extensive clouds and a risk of a few showers, particularly north of I-96. Finally by Monday the upper low is shown to lift out and sfc ridging arrives so a dry pattern with fewer clouds and moderating temps is expected for early next week.
