Our current winter weather advisory expires at noon today for Montcalm-Gratiot-Kent-Ionia-Clinton-Allegan-Barry-Eaton and Ingham counties. Snow will continue into mid-morning being locally heavy at times in the I-69 area and the I-94 corridor between now and 7 am with snowfall rates of up to half-inch an hour. We have 2.5 inches of new snow at 5:30 am which bring us to 3.4 inches for the month and 57.8 inches since November.
We have a cold 19° at 5:30 this morning. Or high temp for yesterday was 36° and the low was 20°.
Snow near and south of I-96 will come to an end by late morning. Possibly another inch of snow may accumulate down in that area before the snow comes to an end. An arctic front will move through the area late in the day, preceded by a band of snow showers. It will be unseasonably cold today with highs near freezing and lows tonight back into the teen. A trend toward milder temperatures is looking more probable around the middle of next week with temps rising to 60°. Occasional weather systems passing through will provide chances for rain or wet snow.
Forecast Discussion
- Snow showers This morning with brief shot this evening - The synoptic pattern continues to allow isentropic lift to fuel the snow showers this morning. Snow bands will continue through sunrise before the strongest winds aloft shift to the east, cutting off the flow, which will then end the snow showers. Skies will be cloudy but conditions will continue to improve through the day. An upper level trough and the corresponding cold front will create a frontogenetic line which will move through the region this evening. Along this line, which should move through beginning around 4 PM near Ludington and exit around midnight near Jackson will create snow showers with light snow accumulations but reduced visibility which will allow for slower commutes this evening. - Lake effect snow tonight into Saturday - Behind this cold front a deepening upper level trough will shift the winds from northwest flow to more northerly. This, coupled with a saturated DGZ, a strong chance in temperature and cold air aloft could fuel 2 to 4 inch snow accumulations along the lakeshore with higher amounts in Mason, Oceana, Van Buren and western Allegan counties possible. An advisory for these areas is possible. - Frontal system Saturday Night into Monday - Well below normal cold air will settle over the area Saturday, with Max T`s that will have a hard time reaching the low 20s. That cold air will be short lived as a warm front will build into the region Sunday. Out ahead of this warm front will be be a mid level trough that with mid level moisture and instability will proved yet another round of snow showers Sunday morning. The focus for these snow showers will be north of I-96 and along primarily along the lakeshore. The forward propagation will bring some snow into the adjacent counties, mainly along the US 10 corridor. The before mentioned warm air will move into the region Monday into Tuesday. Along with this will be a very moist air mass stemming from a deepening trough that should extend well through the mid west and into Texas. The moisture tapped by this trough will along for showers, which will more likely be mostly rain, through Monday into Tuesday. A warmer and more zonal trend will continue through next week with another round of showers possible the end of next week.
Does anyone know when the (I think) they are called the Skywarn Classes are being offered this year? I read about it being virtual this year and it would work out perfect for a person I know. Let me know. Thanks.
That was a nice quick burst of snow. We were eating at Fricano’a Pizza in Caledonia when it started coming down. Had a layer of snow on the car when we left.
BTW If you haven’t had Fricanos pizza I recommend it. Been going there since I was a little kid. There a few locations in West MI. Starting to get a little pricey but nice treat now and then.
The snow just keeps coming and coming! Wow, just wow!
We are in a stretch of below normal temps! Enjoy it while it lasts! Rock n roll will never die!
It’s a good thing that I didn’t run outside 1st thing this morning to shovel like my neighbors. The snow on the sidewalk and driveway is completely gone. However, I am letting the snowblower run right now to burn the fuel left in the tank. I am being optimistic that I will not need it again this season.
I am going to have to run my snowblower soon to burn out the gas that is in it. In fact I still have a good amount of gas in my gas can I hope it is still good as I bought it back in December. It is only a 2 gallon can but I have only had to use my blower 2 times this winter. I only had a half inch of snow so there was no need to shovel at all. There is still snow in the driveway in the shade.

Considering the price for fuel, I should have drained the tank and put it back in the gas can. Hindsight is always 20/20.
LOL!!! You are preaching to the choir Mark!!!
Mark I have an electric snow blower. It is way nicer, there are no fumes to breath in either
I haven’t measured the snow, but everything is covered and it looks like mid-winter. That’ll be changing in a couple days
18 degrees outside in my hood feels like January and its mid-way through March brrrr …InDzy
Rock on! What a winter and it just keeps going! This is another great weekend for skiing, ice skating, ice fishing, etc, etc! Incredible!
You have 2 days to enjoy your inch or two of snow before the BIG MELT!
I will enjoy it! It has been an awesome winter for sports! What a winter!
Its been 5 months of snow and cold thank goodness we dont get 5 months of hot weather here in west Michigan…Not sure what I would do lol…Indy
I have a fresh 2.5” of snow at my house. Not a ton, but just adds more to a nice winter!
Yew it has since November we have had snow and cold loving it!! InDY
The trend of winter continued with 90% of the snow going south towards lansing. We got 0.5” and very fine snow is still falling.
As usual, GR misses most of the snow! 60’s next week again will feel so nice!
What more snow no way …..Glad I haven’t put the shovel away just the facts I must say …InDY
Here at my house just 0.5″ of snow fell overnight. And there is now a half inch of snow on the ground here. The overnight low here at my house was 19 and at this time it is 20. There looks to be a quick cold snap then a rather big warm up next week with highs only near 20 tomorrow but there is a chance of highs around 60 by Thursday.

Wow, the cold and snow just keeps coming! What a winter! Lansing got hammered again! Incredible!
Lansing area does seem to be a magnet for snow this winter.
Well, I didn’t expect to need to shovel a path out back so our little dog could do her business this morning. We have 4” on the back deck and 2” on the driveway (assuming some melted on the concrete). A dozen or so school closures in our area, but not ours – to our kids’ displeasure.
Enjoy winter and all of that fresh snow! Fantastic!
