Our temperature this morning at 6 am is 19°. Yesterday’s high was 32° with a few peeks of the sun warming things up and the early morning low was 21°. Mainly cloudy skies can be expected today along with highs in the 20s. A southeast wind of 10 to 20 mph will make it feel a bit colder. Low pressure moving through the region tonight will bring a wintry mix. Light snow (dusting to an inch) is expected near and north of I-96 tonight. To the south of I-96 sleet and freezing rain are expected. Light ice accumulations are possible. There is a winter weather advisory for the southern two-thirds of counties for tonight.
Weather History
1890: Temperatures more like April than February prevail during one of the mildest winters on record in Lower Michigan. Lansing sets a record high of 61 degrees for the second day in a row.
1918: Frigid weather holds on across Lower Michigan with the temperature falling to record lows of 16 below zero at Muskegon and 21 below at Lansing.
On February 5, 2014, a winter storm 6 to 8 inches of snow to Southeast Michigan. The highest accumulations were measured in Wayne, Washtenaw, and Monroe counties including 8 inches in Detroit. Flint recorded 5.8 inches while Saginaw recorded only 4 inches.
Also on February 5, 1918, the overnight temperature dropped to -23 degrees in Saginaw. This is the record low for this city.
Forecast Discussion
- Light Wintry Mix Likely Late Tonight A weak mid to upper level system will bring a light wintery mix of precipitation late tonight into early Thursday morning. Short range guidance trends continue to suggest that relatively steadier freezing rain overnight will stay south of our fcst area. A consensus blend of latest data and 00Z HREF fram guidance suggests that only around five hundredths of an inch of fzra or less will fall along the I-94 corridor. Therefore we will hoist a winter wx adv for the I-94 counties from 03Z Thur - 14Z Thur to cover the Thur am commute across that area. Pcpn north of the I-94 corridor will be lighter and not impactful enough to warrant a headline. - Windy Conditions Thursday The tightening pressure gradient between the low pressure system moving east across Ontario and ridge over the northern Plains will result in strong winds which could reach advisory criteria Thursday. The relatively best chc for gusts near or exceeding 45 mph will be across our lakeshore counties where gusts could easily reach 50 mph. Conditions may reach adv criteria inland as well. A wind advisory headline will likely eventually be needed for this wind event. - Impactful Winter Weather Saturday A strengthening low pressure system will move ene from the central Plains states across the lower Great Lakes region Saturday bringing an impactful mix of pcpn. The most likely low track and thermal profiles suggest that a mostly snow event will occur near to north of I-96 with a mix of freezing rain sleet and snow south of I-96. Deeper moisture and some mid level frontogenetical forcing suggests potential for some banded heavier snowfall. A swath of six inches or more of snowfall seems quite possible if not probable across our northern fcst area.

The storm this weekend looks interesting… we will have to see the track though. If it shifts further north then it could get really messy. Would much rather get the 6” of snow

Ugh… I need the sun to come out and melt snow. It is so icy since it comes out and freezes back up at night.
I have a better idea! I need a 6 inch plus snowstorm to completely cover the ice and crusty snow! Great base for snowmobiling, etc!
Get ready! So much for a dry uneventful, warm week! Snowstorm this weekend! Who knew?
