We have 20° at 5:20 this morning and I would say we have around five inches of new snow on the ground. (I will get the official measurement later this morning). Michigan is living up to its slogan Winter Wonderland this winter.
Our winter weather advisory expires at 1 pm. Additional snow showers will be likely through the day at times. However, additional accumulations will mostly be an inch or less. Winds will become gusty this afternoon, with gusts to 30 mph expected. These winds will cause some blowing and drifting snow. Quieter weather is expected for early Friday, before another area of snow moves in later in the day and night.
Weather History
1938: Heavy rain and warm temperatures prevail for the second day. Lansing records over three inches of rain from the storm and Grand Rapids over two inches and some minor flooding is noted across Lower Michigan.
On February 13, 2022, convective snow showers impacted Metro Detroit during the late afternoon to early evening. Snowfall rates in excess of an inch per hour were observed and some locations around Livonia received 6 inches of snow in total. This snowfall led to numerous accidents and the closing of several stretches of interstate highways.
On February 13, 2015, Flint set a daily record low of -8 degrees. This broke the old record of -7 which occurred in both 1970 and 1958.
Also on February 13, 1894, a two-day snowstorm dropped 12.8 inches of snowfall on Detroit.
Forecast Discussion
- Lake Effect Snow Showers Today The widespread synoptic snowfall has come to a close this morning as the low-pressure system responsible pulls away from the region. As 850mb temps fall into the negative teens, combined with enhancement from a vorticity maxima, a lake effect snow showers develop this morning. A heavier burst of up to around 1 inch or so is likely through early afternoon near and west of US131 so have extended the advisory through 1PM for our western two rows of counties. Drifting snow may be an issue today, especially on north-south roads given gusts to near 30 mph. For areas east of US131 the advisory will be allowed to expire at 7am. The exiting of the shortwave causes inversion heights to fall this afternoon so the intensity of lake effect snow showers will diminish before ending this evening. - Additional Snow Expected This Weekend, Then Cold A brief break in the snow is expected Friday due to surface and upper-level ridging Friday before snow returns Friday Night. Friday night into Saturday a burst of warm air advection snow aided by a 700mb shortwave. A quick 3 to 6 inches of snow looks likely, with most of it falling Friday Night. South of I96 we may see the DGZ dry out enough to support afternoon drizzle. Given surface temps warm into the mid 30s when this occurs the drizzle would be of the non- freezing variety. As for Sunday light snow is possible, but the latest trends track the surface low we`ve been monitoring over the Appalachians which is too far east to bring heavier FGEN forced snow to western Michigan. Lake effect snow showers are then expected for the western half of the area later Sunday into the early workweek as arctic air arrives. 850mb temps in the negative 20s will also bring highs in the teens and lows in the single digits.
Isn’t winter AWESOME!
Get ready! A triple barrel system this weekend! Wow!
Winter Storm Jett looks great! Rock n roll will never die!!!!
Weather Alert…..get ready for an extended WWA for this weekend! The snow will come in waves and will exceed 6 inches by Monday! Then very cold next week! What a winter! PS: I love the Gulf of Mexico!
Man, can wait for my trip down to the Gulf of America in late March! Gonna be nice to get in some warm air down there!
I actually like the name Gulf of America- it is more “inclusive” since it’s North America, Central America, and South America. Kind of sounds unifying, instead of being named after just one country
We added another inch or so of lake effect today.
The snow just keeps coming! It has been snowing in GR non stop for the last 5 hrs!
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! What a storm and what a winter!
Welp. Not much of a “storm” for GR. Better luck next time?
From NWS Grand Rapids:
“Here is a snowfall map showing the approximate snowfall from across Lower Michigan. While dry air around Grand Rapids lowered totals there was still a widespread 4 to 6 inches with areas of higher totals along the lakeshore and near Lansing”

My brother said 5″ at MSU- seems to match with Mark’s measurement
Next week is looking quite cold! I’d imagine the coldest week we will see for quite a while… March is getting closer. Still a cold month, but subzero seems unusual by then
Most of Kent county has picked up between 3 to 4 inches of snow so far and Breaking News it is Still SNOWING! This is all part of the same system and the snow keeps piling up! What a storm!
This is all lake effect now.
Slim
Yes, lake effect as part of the same low pressure systems and frontal Boundary! Wow! It just keeps coming!
The snow just keeps coming and coming and coming!!!!!!
>>>>>>>Weather ALERT>>>>>>> Many places in the GRR areas will see 6+ inches of snow this weekend and then below zero wind chills next week! What a winter! Above normal snowfall, below normal temps and great outdoor winter sports for almost all of this winter! Wow, just wow, WOW!!!
Lots of totals on here between 4-6”. Exactly what the WWA was calling for. Nothing “underperforming” they actually did pretty well. My friend in Montague has 4-5” of snow. So it looks like the immediate GR area was lower than expected as well as some places to the SW and NE of there. Other places seemed to have performed within the expectations. Sure it’s lower than what was expected a couple days ago, but sometimes that’s how systems work.
Facts! Rock on Kyle! Over the years the warm weather nuts always say the storm is no big deal and we didn’t get much snow! They will still this when we pick up an 8-10 inch storm! Some things never change!
It may not have underperformed in Ionia County but here in the GR metro the “storm” only brought around 2″ The good news is that the NWS did not issue a Winter Storm Warning. The official snowfall yesterday at Grand Rapids was 2 inches, Muskegon 4.0″ Lansing 4.5″ Detroit 1.5″, Flint 3.8″ Saginaw 3.8″. Alpena 2.8″ Houghton Lake 3.8″. So most of lower Michigan received 4″ or less yesterday. At the current time there is snow and blowing snow here in MBY.

6 inches of new snow out at thee YARDOFBRICKS and more snow on the way today tomorrow Saturday and Sunday GREAT CRACKERS…Getting close to the 70 inches mark for the season SNOW CRACKERS…INDY
The weekend storm looks great! Bring it!
Here in N. Kazoo County I measured 4.5 inches of fluffy snow. Once again, an under performing snow event (thankfully because I have a large driveway).
WWA was for 4-6. Looks like they nailed it by you.
Definitely a WWA was warranted and right in line with the snowfall estimates!
For accurate data from trained weather professionals, the CoCoRaHS data is available for all to view. Looks like all of Kent County came in around the 2” mark for snowfall. So slim seems right on the money!

Well more than the dusting we received from Saturdays “storm”, but just an underwhelming 2 inches from another overhyped event.
What a storm! Solid 4 inches with tons more this weekend! Incredible winter!
Measured in 4 locations and here in my yard just 2″ of rather light fluffy new snow. The left over old snow is very hard and one can almost walk on top of it. We shall see how much snow we get over the weekend.
Slim
My regular south side spot has 4 inches , but I think north side has a little more
It sure would be helpful if included your location!
Yes, a location would be nice.

Plainwell area
Thanks

4.5” of snow on the ground at my house this morning.
Yesterday’s snowfall here in MBY was less than the forecasted 3 to 6 as only 2” feel. The overnight low and current temperature is 21. There is now 2” of snow on the ground. The snow is very light in nature so once again no need for the snowblower.
Slim
Less than forecast here as well. This “storm” went from 6-10”, down to an actual 2-3” rapidly. A pretty big miss in forecasting this time.
We ended up with a solid 5”.
