Winter Weather Advisory Continues

I for one am happy I removed the snow yesterday before it froze and became an unmovable frozen lump.  Temp here is 14° at 7 am dropping from a high of 37° yesterday afternoon.  I spent three hours out in the rain blowing snow and my Cartharts were soaked.  Today’s snow will be much easier to move however it does tend to blow back at you.  A balaclava is a good option in light fluffy snow and snow blowing.

With the wind whipping about overnight it is hard to visually discover snowfall amounts here until I can get out to find an area unaffected by it.  I am thinking about another three or four inches on top of the four inches of crust.

I am thankful we haven’t had the snows we had years ago when the roof had to be shoveled, I had the kids up there when they were in their teens helping which they were actually excited to do (of course with strong supervision).  I remember times when the furnace shut down because the exhaust pipe got covered. All the kids have since moved on to have their own properties to worry about, at least they know how to safely shovel a roof without removing the shingles.  When I lived in Maine we could get jobs roof shoveling in the winter.

The Winter Weather Advisory will end at 1 PM for Ionia, Mecosta, and Montcalm counties. It will end at 4 PM for Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, and Ottawa counties. Barry, Allegan, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, and Calhoun counties will be under the advisory until 7 PM…  At this time snow is confined to Allegan, Kent, and Ottawa counties.  The wind had died down considerably from last night.

Temps will begin to rise again midweek before our next system brings in another mixed bag of precipitation at the end of the week.

To know how many sprites did this storm take you Indy, lol!!! I think I’ll be able to enjoy a couple sprites tonight and let my crews finish the cleanup… Hoping that was our wet heavy one for the season… I would rather plow 20 inches of lake effect than that heavy slop.. I hope everyone that loves the snow got out and enjoyed it today… I’m ready for spring!!!!

Indy, There does not look to be a lot of snow this next week or so. In fact there could be a little snow or a little rain but not a whole lot of either at this time. So far the coldest low here at Grand Rapids is +7 we will have to see how cold it gets tonight. I will look up some years with the warmest minimum for the winter season and post later.

Wow, got the snowblower some use today for the first time since last Winter! Not bad, 50 days into Winter before even firing it up.

Slim

Even with the snow fall over the last 2 days the month, winter and season are still below average as of this date. And the coldest it has gotten this winter is just +7 I will have to look up what are some warm winter lows.

Officially at GRR the snow fall for yesterday was 6.3″ That is about what I had yesterday. The totals (not including what fell after midnight) for Grand Rapids for January 8.8″ for meteorological winter 23.1″ for the season 29.9″ Here at my house I had 6″ of new snow overnight and with the compacting I have 8.5″ on the ground at this time. It is now 26° the snow has now stopped and there are some breaks in the clouds.

I went out at 10p.m. last night with my heavy coat on, just standing in the drive, face into the wonderful wind driven snow, enjoying every moment of it! We had good friends over for dinner from G.R. who were staying the night, so they could also relax and not worry about having to drive in it in the dark. Not sure how much is in our driveway, due to the effects of wind, but after walking in the back yard, I would guess maybe 4-6 inches…
