Winter Weather Advisory – Cold Continues

Yesterday we had a period of light snow which left around a tenth of an inch of accumulation and another .2 fell overnight.  The high temp yesterday was 27° and the low was 15°.

We have winter weather advisories for the bottom two rows of counties until 8 pm tonight:

Expect lake enhanced snowfall today near and south of I-96 through the day today into early this evening. A low-pressure system over southern Lake Michigan is expected to move onshore by mid-morning. This will result in snow showers that will be briefly heavy at times. By mid to late morning the snow showers are expected to move well inland reaching the I-69 area by midday. The snow showers, being locally heavy will likely cause some traffic delays and cause roads to become icy as salt does not work as well when temperatures are in the teens. So if you plan to travel in Michigan near and south of I-96 expect some traffic delays due to snow showers.

We have opposite extremes in LA today for the Super Bowl:

A Heat Advisory is in effect for the Los Angeles County Coast, the San Gabriel Valley and the San Fernando Valley through 6 PM Sunday. High temperatures will reach 85 to 90 degrees each day through Sunday.

Forecast Discussion

...Snow along the lakeshore today and mainly south of I-96...

A deep upper trough will move across the cwa today producing snow
and enhancing the ongoing lake effect snow at the lake shore. The
06z HRRR shows a compact meso low over southern Lake Michigan that
is progd to move east along the I-94 corridor today. The lift from
the meso low and the upper trough should lead to accumulating snow
in the 3 to 5 inch range south of I-96, with highest amounts closer
to the lake shore. We`ve issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the
southern two rows of counties through 00z.

...Clipper brings some snow Monday...

A clipper will move across the state Monday, but it`s going to be on
a weakening trend as it moves through. We`re likely to see light
snow develop Monday morning which may slow down the morning commute.
The snow will wind down Monday afternoon after an inch or two
accumulates.

...Messy midweek system...

For a few days the major models have been advertising a cold front
pushing into the state Wednesday evening and then a low riding up
the front Wednesday night and Thursday. The operational GFS and
ECMWF have been waffling back and forth a bit on the track of the
low and the timing of the cold air push into the cwa. The ensembles
for both models, however, have been pretty consistent on total
qpf...and it`s around an inch. The latest operational GFS is farther
south and so produces more snow over the southern cwa. But we`re
leaning toward the ensemble means because it`s more steady.

Half of the qpf is likely to be rain, at least over the southern cwa
as temperatures warm into the mid to upper 40s Wednesday. But then
as the cold front sinks south, the rain will turn to snow and we`re
probably looking at a few to several inches of accumulation. During
the transition, a brief period of sleet looks possible too.

The warmer temperatures will be replaced with another surge of cold
air. Temperatures will fall through the 30s Thursday and by Friday
we`ll be looking at highs in the lower to mid 20s.

From the lastest Forecast Discussion:

“including frequent visibilities below 1/2 mile at Lansing. (Parts of U.S. 127 have been closed in the area.) ”

I can vouch for that. 🙂

Snowed steadily for a couple of hours and then stopped. Went out to shovel 2″ of extremely light, fluffy snow. As soon as I finished shoveling, it’s started up again. We have at least another inch and it’s still coming down pretty hard.

If you put the radar in motion, you can see the meso-low spinning along the I-94 corridor. Pretty cool.

Getting light snow falling here with a current temperature of 18.

Small, fine flakes falling here, and a lot of them. Very picturesque. Have a great day, friends.

At this time very light snow is falling here. 0.1″ of new snow fell overnight there is still 5.0″ of snow on the ground here at my house and officially at GRR there is also 5″ on the ground. There now has been 49 days in a row of 1″ or more of snow on the ground at GRR. At this time with that very light snow falling it is 13 here.
