Another hard fact of this winter is the lack of ice on inland lakes much to the chagrin of ice fishermen (and women) who delight in sitting for hours on end pulling fish out of a 8 inch hole in sub freezing weather. Sadly this may be a year known as the year without ice and all the ice fishing gear and shanties will remain in limbo. There is still the option of loading up the boat and going at it the way it as it has been done in the rest of the year. I have a large row boat but my preferred method has been fishing off the shore which has remained as productive as any $25000 bass boat. The strangest thing I ever caught was a large muskrat who thought my rubber worm was the real thing. It was around daybreak so I didn’t know what I had until I hauled him on shore at which time I promptly cut the line and let him go his own way. Poor little fellow.
We had a high temp of 50.2° yesterday before it started dropping off into the upper 40s after midnight. Our rainfall was at .21 of an inch. Any residual rain showers will change over to snow later today which will bring in a winter weather advisory for the lakeshore counties which begins at 5pm and lasts through 7pm tomorrow. The advisory isn’t for huge snow amounts but rather the freezing of the roadways and the wind. Our temps will fall into the 20s tonight through Thursday night with snowfall amounts of three inches through the period.
As I stated yesterday I had forced upgrades to this site yesterday which raised all sorts of havoc – I have fixed most of the serious formatting errors with the exception of some of the tabbed features which I have to re-code and will take some time – I have a least been able to keep the site open for business. Forced upgrades are the ones which are software changes for security reasons such as the ones Microsoft does much to the irritation of its users. This can cause errors and formatting issues and sometimes make a system unusable and unstable. This is why I hold off from any changes to coding until I absolutely have to. My philosophy has been if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. This is like someone throwing a rock through your window and repairs have to be made….
Actually 34* degrees now and snowing out at the YARDofBRICKS NW GR!! INDY!
As of today, GR is now about 24 inches below average for the meteorological Winter season, and growing by the day. What a perfect Winter!
Old man winter still staying up in Canada .. NO polar vortex in sight .. Love it !!!
Oh and more 40s showing up in the 8 day ..
Currently 35* degrees with snow falling out at thee YARDofBRICKS …INDY!
Love the daylight we are gaining in the evening now! Sunsets have been getting later for a month now. Spring will soon be here!
In roughly 70 days!
https://days.to/until/spring
With 70’s and 80’s in April lol! INDY!
Says the one who a month ago laughed at the suggestion of 40s and 50s in January. I think you should wait for your track record to improve before posting things like that.
Still waiting for that bad Thunderstorm we get every January LOL! INDY!
There’s the difference. You wishcast, I do not. I pointed out that the past 2 or 3 January’s we’ve had thunderstorms with vivid lightning. Look it up and quit making things up.
MV I know what you mean about upgrades making a mess out of stuff. I had to take my computer into the shop because of it. Only me and one other person had the same issue I was told.
The sun has decided to peak out. Looks so nice!! and welcomed.
All signs continue to point to warm! So much for that cold and snowy January! Maybe the winter lovers will get a few weeks of winter this year if they are lucky. Temps bottom in about 10 days and then gradually increase into spring.

The warmer temps are great on our heating bills but the lack of snow could be hurting the Great Lakes with lower water levels.
We have been getting plenty of precipitation this winter with the rain and I think the great lakes are still way above their normal levels, so they should be alright. Slim may want to add some stats to this?
We are still BELOW normal for snowfall .. Even a couple inches of snow we might see will not even make a close enough dent in our deficit. Facts !!!
I would imagine with a below snowy winter not a lot going on in Portland Michigan weather wise to far from any good effect snows to talk about how many days to spring Thunderstorms? Lol ..INDY…
Went ride over your head .. Lol !!!
Well hopefully Portland will get in on this Winter weather coming…INDY!
Currently 36* degrees and sunny at thee YARDofBRICKS…Cold air is moving in.. INDY!
Just came back from Meijer and they have all the Winter gear, coats, etc on clearance. Funny because we haven’t even had any Winter weather yet. They’re already putting out all the Spring stuff for sale.
If your talking about Meijer that’s nothing new they get winter gear in September and after Christmas it’s all clearance, if you look real hard you will see also see Valentine’s stuff out now Meijer is always ahead of the game …INDY!
Right on Barry !
Not looking too bad, a couple day cool down during the work week and then right back to ABOVE normal temps!! Who Knew?!??!

That’s even on Wood with their cold bias so you could probably add a few degrees to those high temps and that’s probably where we end up!
Andy I’m thinking 40’s are gone fishing for awhile …INDY!
Could be???
Andy Still won’t change how hot our Wolverines basketball team is lol! INDY
Lol!! That is very true INDY!!! GO BLUE and keep that perfect record going!
One can not really point to El Nino as the reason for this winter’s lack of snow and warmth (well you could but) so much for a weak west based El Nino causes a cold winter in the eastern US with this weeks update here are the numbers Nino 4 +0.8C, Nino 3.4 +0.7C, Nino 3 +0.6C and Nino 1+2 +0.2C This indicates a weak west base El Nino.
Slim
I would love to see the cold last into May make up for the last month’s warmth …Funny thing it could happen INDY!
GR will likely see mainly 40’s and 50’s in March and lots of 50’s, 60’s, and even 70’s and 80’s in April.
70’s and 80’s in April hu? Let me guess 90’s and 100’s in May lol! INDY!
Wednesday wind chill in the single digits going to be a shock stepping outside to shovel…INDY!
Who is shoveling less than an inch of snow?? The WWA is for less than 1 inch as Slim stated. And if we have the predicted winds, all the snow will blow off the roads and driveways so there will be nothing to shovel. Laughable at best.
Let me guess your high of 43* and rain for today occurred at midnight? Lol! Currently 38* out at thee YARDofBRICKS! INDY!
Nope. Guess again. Been in the low 40s all day so far here. Off and on sun and rain. Even GR has been in the 40s so far all day:

Hmm it’s always 5 degrees cooler and much snowier at Indy’s house… fishy…
Warmer then average and not much snow are the key words for the 1st half of the winter season of 2018/19. The first week of January Grand Rapids has only recorded 0.9” of snow fall and the mean temperature is now at 34.4° (+9.4°) I have to wonder when was the last time Grand Rapids has had a WWA for less then one inch of snow in January???? Just shows you how little snow we have had this winter a WWA for that amount would be odd even in November or for that matter October. The current temperature here with cloudy skies is 41°
Slim
Yesterday’s average temperature was almost 20 degrees above normal! Tomorrow should be day #30 of this incredible stretch of above average temps, something you just don’t see very often. No matter what the 2nd half of Winter brings, this has been just an amazing and unprecedented run of mild and snowless weather. Only 4 inches of snow in the first 6 weeks of Winter? Almost unbelievable.
No wishcasting there. Just the facts! WOOD is also calling for above average temps to return this weekend and next week.
Temps are falling outside waiting on a cold blast to last the rest of the week will some decent lk effect snows coming finally some winter weather talk on the blog lk bands should kick in this afternoon what a great day to sit back and track snow! loving the winter weather advisory…I’m still seeing a flip flop to a colder snower weather pattern and yes hard for some to swallow but interesting after the lack of snow we have had since December it’s about 2 weeks out! Can’t stay warm forever lol I hope it last till May!! Stay safe today MV’S best….INDY!
+ 100 Billion! Bring it on!
Yes Indy, there are some indications that it (could/should) turn colder at the end of January into the start of February. We shall see.
Slim
I hope so … something different to blog about slim if you know what I mean lol! INDY!
