Our next snow system is working its way towards Michigan and will be moving in later this evening. This is not a major snow event but will create a blanket of shovelable snow. Up to five inches or so will fall mainly south of 196 with lesser amounts north.
The NAM gives Grand Rapids and Lansing around 3 inches and Kalamazoo 4 inches. The RAP is similar with 4.5 inches around Kalamazoo and 3 along I96. The NAM NEST is the same as the RAP and the GFS gives a blanket of 5 inches from I96 to the south so there is some consistency in the models this morning. We may see some drizzle tomorrow.
The dry slot for GR is about history! Who would have thought?
We are getting pummeled with snow and it looks great!
NWS has lowered their forecasted snowfall amounts.
6 inches for my area possible 7 inches of snow great Scotty back loaded Winter is right …INDY
Bring it on!
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Who would’t want a snow storm this time of year as we head into a wild back loaded winter? Bring it!
Barry and Mookie asked what the average number of days are have snow cover of 1” and 3” at Grand Rapids. For 1” the average number of days of snow cover. November 3 days. December 15 days. Thanks Slim! I can’t remember a Winter with such a lack of snow on the ground. The 8 or 9 tenths that fell yesterday has already melted away with today’s sunshine.
Here too. The street was snow covered this morning, but now it’s clear.
So we should be around 25 days with 3″ of snow pack or more, but have only seen 6 days this winter. Wow! I love it!
Winter Weather advisory .INDY
How do you know what seems like everything?? Rhetorical question. No reason to divulge trade secrets. You are truly the master.

Sheesh, they can’t seem to make up their minds. 3-6 yesterday, 2-4 early this morning, and now they’ve changed it back to 3-6. FWIW, local met at noontime said 3-5.
Probably lots of school closings and delays coming tomorrow get ready it’s going to bet bad around west Michigan very slippery roads are on the way …..INDY
Slim, do you know what the average number of days with at least 1 inch of snow on the ground is? And where this year stands? Has to be pretty low like everything else.
Would be even more interesting for days at 3″ or more. 1″ of snow on the ground is pretty much useless except for “White Christmas” recording.
I have the numbers now posted.
Slim
With yesterdays snow fall Grand Rapids is now at 10.2″ for the season that is still almost 3 feet below average as of this date. Last year on this date Grand Rapids had recorded 32.5″ by now on its way to a well below average seasonal total of just 53.5″ So Grand Rapids is now 22.3″ below were we were last year at this time. We should add to this years total this week. At this time it is cloudy here and 27.
Slim
Yes slim with the consistent cooler temps and snow pk on the ground for so long we forget about less snow in inches overallJanuary has been a perfect Winter month that’s for sure around most of Michigan….At one point our state had 95% of it had snow on the ground amazing. ..INDY
The facts would show it has been one of the worst winters on record for consistent deep snow pack. But nice try at spin LOL
For all the talk of snow on here the past few weeks, GR has received a whopping 2.7″ of snow the past 19 days.
GR is now about 3 feet below average snowfall, and GR has only had 6 days all winter when there was 2″ or more snow on the ground.
We have had snow on the ground since Christmas day in my area who would of thought? Great Scotty we have more snow on the way what fabulous Winter month we are enjoying get outside play hace a nice day …INDY
Get ready! More snow this weekend! Incredible!

Great news, even though the storm will be losing some intensity as it tracks towards MI it has shifted a little bit North! The updated 06Z from the RDB model now gives GR 3 to 5 inches! Get your snowblowers tuned up and ready to rock n roll! The back loaded winter has begun! We will be in the late winter storm track well into March! I absolutely love it!
