Temperatures are 30° colder than they were this time yesterday morning, the ground is white once again. We have a winter weather advisory for central, south central, southwest and west central Michigan through 1pm today mainly due to the flash freeze with sleet freezing rain and snow – snow accumulations will be around a couple inches.
Black ice and snow will make for a slick morning commute. One to four inches of new snow with blowing snow is expected today mainly south and east of Grand Rapids.
You can go here (WWMT) and here (WOODTV) for school closings.
Lake effect snow will result in some light accumulations west of Highway 131 over the weekend. A more widespread snow is expected beginning Sunday night and continuing through Tuesday, with accumulations likely over most of the area.
Arctic air returns to the region today behind a cold front and will be with us into next week. Some roads will be slick for the morning commute as temperatures fall into the 20s and residual moisture freezes up. Also a 1 to 4 inch snowfall is expected this morning for areas south and east of a line from South Haven to Alma. Lake effect snow will occur near Lake Michigan over the weekend but no significant accumulations are expected. A more widespread snow is expected beginning Sunday night and continuing through Tuesday, with some light accumulations likely over most of the area.
A stacked low will to be moving into the Western Great Lakes by early next week. This will keep the region in the cold air, along with a prolong period of snow that should start late Sunday night and last until Monday night or Tuesday. This system will also see some lake enhancement with H8 temps around -15C. This will be mainly true once the low is to our east, by Monday night. Snow amounts could be rather impressive, with 2-4 inches expected inland, and perhaps 6-9 inches for areas west of U.S. 131 by Tuesday morning. Once this system is to our east another reinforcing surge of arctic air moves in for Tuesday and Wednesday. Lake effect snow, mainly hugging the coast should persist these two days.

BIG BBALL GAME @ HIGH NOON….
Who Are You Rooting FOR?
MICHIGAN
OR
MSU…..
Michigan, of course!
But, with as bad as Sparty has looked the past couple of games, I totally expect them to suddenly get everything figured out and they’ll beat Michigan at home by a dozen points or so. Oh well, as long as Michigan is firing on all cylinders in March, I’ll be happy!
C’mon Jack….
Go Green!
Oh and here is the rest of the GRR NWS Discussion:
Overall the models show mid level height rises Thursday into Friday.
This will support a moderating trend to the temperatures. If the
trends continue we may see well above normal temperatures by
Saturday.
Plenty of WARMTH & MELTING next weekend!!
https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/USMI0344:1:US
All trends pointing towards WARMER than normal!!! Bring it!!!

SNOW for the beginning of next week sounds very promising!!!
“This system evolves into a closed low that slowly
drifts through the area through Tuesday. Typically these kinds of
systems lead to widespread impacts. How much of an impact is
somewhat uncertain…but the synoptic aspect of the low will support
accumulating snow for the region. The atmospheric will be plenty
cold enough to keep the precipitation as all snow.”
The LONG RANGE..JEM Model IS Looking at Jan. 25-30th FOR a BIG HEAVY SNOW EVENT….In West Michigan.
Stay Cued….
It’s about time the JEM model came to the winter party! I will mark it down!
>>>>>WINTER WEATHER ALERT>>>>The preliminary RDB snowfall forecast gives GR 4 to 6 inches of SNOW by next Tuesday. Also only a minor warm up next weekend with plenty of clippers and synoptic snow chances the next 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROCK it out!
Welcome back winter! Not a bad 5 day SNOW map and there will plenty more SNOW after the 5 day period as well!
http://wxcaster.com/gis-gfs-snow-overlays.php?STATIONID=GRR
But what happened to the 5 day snow map you posted about 5 days ago? That showed my area getting a foot and a half, yet all I see is bare ground today.
That was a 15 day snow map and this only gives the trends! The current trend is COLD and SNOW baby! You gotta love it!
The only trend I see going back several years now is it cools down for a short time, snows, then we get these record breaking warm ups that disintegrate the entire snow pack in a matter of hours, then it all repeats again. Gone are the days where the snow pack would actually build up for several months in this season we call Winter. That’s why I sold off my sleds. Getting 5 hours of use out of them a year can not justify keeping them.
We barely got a dusting around here overnight, not even enough to cover the ground. Here’s a link to Holland’s web cam, you can see there’s barely any snow that fell:

Boy I was supersized to wake up this morning to a solid half inch of snow cover. I went to bed with only a few snow piles around. Yesterday was the warmest January 11th in recorded history here in Grand Rapids. With both the high of 58 and the low of 39 being new records for the date. By records at other locations that have kept records longer it looks like January 11th 1890 was a warmer day across region. At this time I have a temperature of 24° with some very light snow falling and some blowing snow.

Schools started cancelling about 5:30 – about the same time freezing rain and sleet started pelting the windows. I think all schools are closed, it was a good call. It turned to all snow about 6:15 and we have about 2″ already. Visibility and the roads are bad.
It is nice to see the COLD and SNOW return! It is going to be a wintry weekend and next week! I love it!
Then back to WARMER than normal and MELTING next weekend!! Love that!!
