Forecast Discussion
- Record Warmth and Windy Tue-Wed A vast warm sector is spreading over Michigan today through Wed, with air in the low levels sourced from the southern Plains and Gulf of Mexico region. Highs in the mid to upper 70s today and Wed, along with lows in the lower to mid 60s tonight, would put records in jeopardy (see Climate section below). We will be under the influence of the upper-level ridge over eastern portions of the CONUS, and heights won`t begin falling appreciably until Wed night. Somewhat drier air in the low-mid levels will advect in behind the showers and storms that came through overnight. Latest short-term models continue to point toward partial sunshine today and Wednesday, mostly thin cirrus today and a bit thicker cirrus on Wed. A sustained low-level jet around 850 to 925 mb will extend from the Central Plains to over Lower Michigan today through Wednesday. 30 to 40 mph gusts are likely between late morning and mid afternoon in many locations today. HREF models, especially the HRRR, depict a localized zone of somewhat higher gust potential to 45 mph today within several miles of Lake Michigan, from western Allegan County to Mason County. A wind advisory will be issued there for today, and another one may be needed on Wednesday. Dew points in the mid 50s to near 60 on Tue and Wed may mitigate the fire weather threat a little, though any location that has dry fuels and strong winds can still be prone to fire spread. - Rain Wednesday Night and Thursday, Could end by Evening Wednesday night and Thursday will see rain moving in ahead of and along a cold front advancing eastward, which will put an end to the balmy temperatures. There could also be some embedded thunder as model soundings show elevated instability and a strong low level jet. The trick or treating forecast is indeed tricky for Thursday evening. We may be in a dry slot in between rain associated with the warm conveyer belt moving off to the east and developing lake- enhanced rain showers in the post-frontal cyclonic flow. Did not lower the NBM POPs yet, but this could be refined as we get closer to the event. Surface high builds in with dry and cool weather for the end of the week. Then return flow moisture increases late in the weekend although precip chances will be low until shortwave trough digs in across the Great Lakes early next week.
