We continue our roller coaster ride through this early part of winter here in Southern Michigan while areas around us find themselves in snow cover. Winter doesn’t officially begin until Saturday and the Arctic beast continues to lay in wait in the north country.
This is the latest graphic from NOAA showing the snow cover in the U.S. and Canada – it also shows the Hudson Bay completely frozen. Tomorrow the map will increase the snow cover through Indiana, Ohio and up the east coast due to a system passing to our south.
It is not as if there isn’t cold air to our north, we haven’t had the forcing mechanism to push it down into the U.S. or a pattern to hold it there for any length of time. Above are this morning temps in Canada. Even when the cold air does come south we are lucky that we have the Great lakes to moderate our air temps.
As far as having a white Christmas it seem the past few years we have seen more green than white covering the ground. Like last year we remain out of the main storm tracks and the Arctic air remain in Canada – the best place to be if you like snow is in the U.P.
Any snow we do get will come and go – the best chances this week are for the lake shore counties tomorrow into Wednesday – the rest of the week looks dry. Dry and uneventful weather may last right on through Christmas.
Above normal temps on the way for Christmas week.. Yup, a green Christmas this year.. I will take no snow .. Can you say 40s .. 🙂
Currently 29* degrees out at thee YARDofBRICKS NE nice cold meteorology Winter day for December standards…INDY ..
29 is exactly the average temp for today when you average today’s normal high and low.
Winter is looking good after this brief warm up starting this weekend. By the end of December we will be making a sharp turn to cold and snow! Bring it on and I hope we get absolutely hammered!!
If last week was hyped as the “Arctic Blast”, what do we call next week? The “Tropical Blast”?
Looking like another green chrismas, just like last year. The only big difference from a year ago is last year we had more snow by this point. This year we are falling further behind the average with each passing day. Cool and snowless, gotta love that!
By January 1st, roughly 40% of the winter’s snow will have fallen. Winter is going by quick!
Breaking news!,,, All signs still point to a rocking winter with above normal snowfall!! Enjoy the brief warm up the week of Christmas, because we will be getting walloped later this winter! Get prepared now!
Just was checking out the MODELS around January 1st looks pretty cold with snow lk effect snows that would be great start to 2020…INDY…

Officially in Grand Rapids for Christmas there have been 116 years of snow cover reports. Of the 116 years there have been 22 years with no snow reported on the ground 19 years with a trace reported and 75 years with one inch or more (officially a white Christmas) That means of the 116 years of reports Grand Rapids has had a white Christmas of around 65% of the time. This year looks like it might be the 6th time in the last 10 years of having a green Christmas or just a 40% chance.

I was over in your neck of the woods yesterday. Our son played Fox Motors at Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center. Nice rink. Lansing Senators won a nail-biter 6-5. Great game. Exciting til the very end.
Yep…”wet” year. This year, my asphalt driveway repair project only reached 60%, as rain was a never ending threat 🙁 Big finish next year.
We are now at the half way point in December 2019. While temperatures so far are near average the snow fall has been well below average. Get ready for a below normal temp week! Day after day we will have below normal temps this week! Will December end up as the 10th month this year with below normal temps? We are entrenched in a below normal temp pattern! Wow!
More like one or two days of cold and then another big warm up through the end of the year?
I’m at work this morning and the app above has the location as Holland. I’m right on MainStreet in Zeeland.
WOOD says no White Christmas this year. Sure is quiet for what is supposed to be one of the snowiest parts of the year…
Amazing Spring is only 95 days away ….And for it being quiet that’s funny when is vacation again? Lol…INDY..
Whenever I need a laugh, I read you and Rocky’s hype filled snowfall predictions for December.
As for the chances of a white Christmas over the years it has been about 65% but in the last 10 years it could now be down to 40% a trend that will have to be watched.
