- ACCUMULATING SNOW IS AGAIN POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY.

SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/

ISSUED AT 349 AM EST SAT FEB 1 2025

PATTERN SYNOPSIS:

TROUGHING WILL CONTINUE TO SLIDE EAST OF THE GREAT LAKES TODAY AS
SHORTWAVE RIDGING AND ASSOCIATED HEIGHT RISES OVERSPREAD THE REGION.
SUBSIDENCE ALOFT WILL BUILD SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OVER SOUTHERN
ONTARIO/NORTHERN MICHIGAN BY MIDDAY, EVENTUALLY SPREADING OVER THE
NORTHEAST CONUS TONIGHT. LOW-AMPLITUDE TROUGHING SLIDING OVER THE
GREAT PLAINS WILL SUPPORT A CYCLONE THAT LOOKS TO TREK INTO THE
UPPER MIDWEST/SOUTHERN CANADA, ENCROACHING ON THE GREAT LAKES BY
SUNDAY MORNING.

FORECAST DETAILS:

ACCUMULATING SNOW RETURNS TONIGHT -- ONGOING LIGHT SNOW
SHOWERS/FLURRIES WILL PERSIST FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS BEFORE TAPERING
OFF THIS MORNING AS AN INCREASINGLY HOSTILE LOW-LEVEL ENVIRONMENT
FILTERS IN FROM THE NORTH WITH TIME. AS DRY AIR WORKS IN, CLOUD
COVER IS EXPECTED TO CLEAR, LEAVING PARTLY TO MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES
ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA AGAIN INTO THIS AFTERNOON. CLOUD COVER WILL
BEGIN TO SPREAD FROM WEST TO EAST ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE
AFTERNOON/EVENING AHEAD OF THE AFOREMENTIONED CYCLONE. OUR NEXT
ROUND OF ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL MOVE IN LATER THIS EVENING AND

BETTER MOISTURE/FORCING.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/

ISSUED AT 349 AM EST SAT FEB 1 2025

SO WE OFFICIALLY MADE IT INTO FEBRUARY. HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THIS
GOOD OLD FASHIONED WINTER, ESPECIALLY AS COMPARED TO LAST YEAR WHEN
WE SET RECORDS FOR HOW WARM IT WAS AND FOR LACK OF SNOWFALL. THE
NEXT SEVERAL DAYS STILL LOOK COLD OVERALL AS WELL AS SEMI-ACTIVE
WEATHERWISE. THERE WILL BE A FEW POTENTIAL SYSTEMS TO KEEP TRACK OF.
THE FIRST ONE IS THE ALBERTA CLIPPER WHICH IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD
SNOW INTO THE REGION LATE TONIGHT. THIS SNOW IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE
INTO SUNDAY MORNING BEFORE TAPERING OFF SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND
EVENING, POSSIBLY EVEN ENDING AS A LITTLE DRIZZLE. ADDITIONAL SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN THE 1 TO 2 INCH RANGE. PERHAPS
ANOTHER PERIOD OF SNOW ACROSS NORTHERN LOWER MONDAY AS THE REGION
WILL BE LOCATED IN THE BATTLE ZONE BETWEEN ARCTIC AIR TO THE NORTH
AND MILDER AIR TO THE SOUTH (PERHAPS AN INCH OR SO OF SNOW
ACCUMULATION). 01/00Z EXTENDED GUIDANCE HAS TRENDED WEAKER AND
FARTHER SOUTH WITH A POSSIBLE SYSTEM DURING THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO
THURSDAY TIME FRAME. IF THIS TREND CONTINUES THEN IMPACTS WOULD BE
LESS INCLUDING LOWER CHANCES FOR MIXED PRECIPITATION AND HEAVY
SNOWFALL. THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF TIME FOR THIS TO CHANGE BUT FOR
NOW WILL STEER THE FORECAST TOWARD A LIGHTER SNOWFALL. MEANWHILE, IN
THE TEMPERATURE DEPARTMENT, THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF ARCTIC AIR
AVAILABLE TO TAP INTO VIA CANADA. PERIODIC PIECES OF THIS COLD AIR
WILL LIKELY BREAK OFF AND INFILTRATE THE REGION.

December was only +0.9, January was a cold -2.6. Pretty good year for winter sports. I know the ski resorts are much happier this winter.

This probably isn’t actually accurate, but I’ve always considered Groundhogs Day as the “halfway point” for the cold season. Technically our coldest day is Jan 30th. The second half of winter is definitely the sunnier half and usually less lake effect snow

GR finished January 1.6” below average snowfall. And four 40+ days in a row.
