Weather History March 11 – 17

A weak area of high pressure will move in today…diminishing the snow showers. A reinforcing shot of cold air arrives by Thursday from the north. This will act to keep the weather colder than normal through the end of the week with below normal precipitation.  We should see a milder pattern develop as we head into the weekend with temperatures near 50° and mostly dry conditions will prevail.

March 11

1948: Arctic air prevails with high temperatures in the teens and low temperatures near zero. Muskegon sets a record low of 2 degrees.

March 12

1976: A tornado outbreak struck from Michigan to Alabama. At least four tornadoes hit Michigan with nine people injured. (image to the left).  Two tornadoes hit Jackson County, with damage to several homes and businesses. One person was injured in Ottawa County as a tornado moved from north of Holland to north of Hudsonville. We had two ef1 and 4 ef2 tornadoes.

One of those tornadoes struck the western and northern suburbs of Chicago, missing President Gerald Ford’s motorcade by only a quarter of a mile.  This must has sent his secret service people into a panic.

March 13

1990: A spell of record warm weather continues across Lower Michigan with temperatures in the 70s. Lansing hits 74 degrees during a string of four straight days in the 70s.

1993: The Superstorm of 1993 dumps three to four feet of snow across the Appalachians and draws down record cold arctic air across Lower Michigan. High temperatures struggle to reach the lower 20s with gusty winds making it feel even colder.

March 14

1904: A snowstorm drops up to a foot of snow across Lower Michigan with record daily snowfall of 10.5 inches at Grand Rapids, 10 inches at Lansing and 8.0 inches at Muskegon. This snow would contribute to some of the worst floods on record in southwest Lower Michigan when it melts off during the last week of the month.

March 15

1912: Cold and snow continue during a very wintry month. Lansing sets a daily snowfall record with 11.5 inches and Grand Rapids with 5.2 inches. Lansing falls to one degree below zero the next morning.

1990: Four days of record warmth culminates with highs of 77 degrees at Lansing, 75 at Grand Rapids and 72 at Muskegon.

March 16

1945: The warmest March on record in southwest Lower Michigan produces record high temperatures in the 70s.

March 17

1943: Heavy rains and melting snow result in flooding across southwest Lower Michigan. Childsdale Dam on the Rogue River gave way. Several families were evacuated from Comstock Park near Grand Rapids.

1973: A record snowstorm dumps over a foot of snow across southern Lower Michigan. Jackson is buried under 19 inches of snow and Lansing has a record 16.5 inches.

From Woodtv

EARLY NEXT WEEK: Right now it looks like a system with rain or a mix will get at least as close to the Indiana border late Monday or Monday night. It’s not impossible that there could be a little mix up as far as I-94, but odds favor that system staying south of Grand Rapids.

Well, we are not even 1/2 through March yet and we have already seen about 5 inches of SNOW! The seasonal average for March is only 8.3 inches, so we are well on our way to another above normal month for snowfall. Here are the facts: 1. We have seen above normal snowfall in GR for the months of December, February and now March! 2. GR is still above normal for seasonal snowfall! 3. We are still expecting more COLD and SNOW yet this month and probably into April! 4. Winter is AWESOME! 5. Rock n Roll will never die!… Read more »

March should soon be below average in terms of snowfall. And so could the winter season too unless we get more snows. A very average year where the snow never stuck around long. I’ll take it!

I have heard that before, yet the above normal snowfall trend continues! INCREDIBLE!

It looks like another nice warm weekend upcoming. WOOD has 48 and 52 for Saturday and Sunday with lots of sun!

Well, we are just about half way through March and GR has seen less than 5″ of snow. In fact, only three days has there been any measurable snow on the ground. Temps are running near average for the month in most places.

What happened to the big warm up with temps in the 50’s? Many days with highs in the 30’s and plenty of chances for SNOW! The ski resort are still running full tilt with great conditions! Who would have thought?
