Weather History

January 19

1907: Southerly winds bring moist and mild weather with highs in the 50s followed by heavy rains as a cold front moves through. Grand Rapids sets a record high for the date of 56 degrees along with a record rainfall total of 1.84 inches.

1979: A homeowner was killed when his garage roof collapsed due to the weight of the snow on it. Several other homeowners suffered injuries as roofs collapsed throughout southwest Michigan. There were more than 50 reported roof collapses by the end of February, with most of the collapses occurring in the second half of January. At one point the snowpack was measured as weighing more than 25 pounds per square foot.

1994: Temperatures remain below zero all day long. Extreme cold prevails from the 14th to the 21st but this is the coldest day. Grand Rapids ties the all-time record low for the month of January with 22 below zero, followed by a high of only 2 below zero. An unofficial low of 53 below zero is recorded in the Upper Peninsula at Amasa, Michigan. Water and sewer pipes freeze, causing 50 million dollars in damage across Michigan

January 20

1906: Temperatures soar into the 60s after a warm front moves through. Grand Rapids hits 64 degrees and Lansing rises to 62, the first of three days of record highs at Lansing.

1985: A vast stream of arctic air keeps high temperatures from rising much, with highs of zero degrees at Lansing and one above at Grand Rapids, along with a bitter west wind gusting to 25 mph.

January 21

1984: The temperature hits a record low of 15 below zero at Grand Rapids for the second consecutive day. The temperature at Lansing only manages to reach zero degrees during the day.

January 22

1883: Bitter cold arctic air sends the temperature down to 14 below zero at Lansing and 8 below in Detroit. The high for the day at Lansing is 4 below zero, the coldest high temperature ever in the month of January there.

2005: A blizzard drops a foot of snow across southern Lower Michigan with strong winds creating drifts up to 4 feet deep.

January 23

1909: Lower Michigan is in the midst of a three day stretch of warm weather. Lansing hits a record high of 60 degrees. Grand Rapids reaches 56 degrees, also a record.

1948: Record lows on this date include 19 below zero at Grand Rapids and 13 below at Muskegon as arctic high pressure and deep snow cover have Lower Michigan in the deep freeze.

January 24

1967: A huge storm is gathering over the Plains States. Out ahead of it, strong southerly breezes bring record warmth to Lower Michigan. Lansing soars to 66 degrees, the warmest on record for the month of January.

January 25

1950: Muskegon sets the record high for the month of January at 63 degrees. Grand Rapids also ties their monthly record high of 66 degrees.

1967: Temperatures reach the 60s for the second day in a row across Lower Michigan. However, the spring-like weather is about to give way to one of the greatest snowstorms on record.

There are some signs that it could turn colder at the end of January and the start of February but that is NOT set in stone as we have seen signs earlier in the winter that changed as we got close and it turned warm instead. Past history hints that we still could have a cold February and March but we shall see. If we do not have a cold late winter then watch out for a cold spring and maybe even a colder than average summer.

Accuweather has 45, 41, 39 to close January.

If we do not see any more big cold, then get ready for an early spring and summer. Without ice or snow around, temps will be able to climb with the stronger sun angle.

Slim

We shall see on that early spring. Of the top 10 warmest January’s (at this time 2020 is still in the running) only 1921 had a mild February and a warm spring. So while it may that may not be the case this year there is still a case to be made that could happen (cold spring)

CPC shows a below average February and March coming and with no ice on lk Michigan the snow may pile up in West Michigan….Even know average temps start going up tomorrow I believe we have a lot of Winter left that could last into April … On that award-winning thought have a nother beautiful Winter Wednesday …INDY…

Slim

There are some signs of a colder pattern to end January.

I can hardly wait until we get hammered with an arctic cold front and we see tons or snow! This will happen by mid February and might last for weeks! Meanwhile it is another great winter day! Cross country skiing here I come! I absolutely love it!

That is interesting that there we’re record high temps in 1906, 1907, and 1909.

Meanwhile in the current century, the seven day forecast shows temps above freezing every day.

Slim

Grand Rapids now has had for the first time this winter 3 days in a row of highs in the 20’s and lows in the teens. Could this be the coldest 3 to 4 days of the winter of 2019/20? We shall see. At this time it is 19 and cloudy here at my house and there is 6″ of snow on the ground here.

Don’t look now but the next 10+ days look very mild. Temps above freezing everyday and lows around the average high this time of year. Maybe some more 40’s coming too.
