Weather History 1/14 through 1/20

January 14

1893: A long siege of arctic cold drops the temperature below zero for 15 out of the first 19 days of January at Lansing. This is the coldest day of the month with a low of 16 below zero.

1932: Grand Rapids is in the midst of a stretch of six days with temperatures above freezing during the warmest January on record.

2005: Two days of heavy rain and high temperatures in the 50s is followed by a stretch of arctic cold, causing massive ice jams to form on the Grand River. The ice jams result in devastating flooding of Robinson Township in Ottawa County. Flooding also occurs on stretches of the Muskegon, Thornapple, Flat and Kalamazoo rivers.

2015: Arctic air and clear skies allow temperatures to drop well below zero. Grand Rapids sets a record low for the second consecutive day with a low of 13 degrees below zero.

January 15

1972: Muskegon falls to 12 below zero to set a record low. The temperature only rises to 4 below zero on this day, the coldest high temperature on record for the month of January at Muskegon. It is also the coldest high temperature for January at Grand Rapids, where the maximum is three below zero.

1984: Lansing plunges to 25 below zero and Grand Rapids falls to 14 below during a stretch of arctic cold. Temperatures are below zero for eight straight days at Lansing between the 14th and the 21st.

January 16

1949: Temperatures reach record highs in the mid to upper 50s for the second consecutive day across southwest Lower Michigan.

1972: The arctic air holds on for one more morning of record lows as Grand Rapids falls to 16 below zero and Muskegon tumbles to 11 below.

January 17

1952: Temperatures rise to record highs of 61 degrees at Battle Creek, 59 degrees at Lansing and 56 at Grand Rapids.

1982: For the second time in a week, extremely cold arctic air drops temperatures to record low levels. The low of 9 below zero at Muskegon is followed by an afternoon high of 7 above. It is even colder away from Lake Michigan where high temperatures remain below zero during the day. Lansing has a high of 1 below and Battle Creek maxes out at 3 below.

January 18

1857: Extreme cold weather prevails across the eastern United States. In Lower Michigan, a temperature of 28 degrees below zero was reported in Grand Rapids.

1976: Arctic air and deep snow results in record cold across interior Lower Michigan. The temperature plunges to 25 below zero at Lansing and 20 below at Jackson. Along Lake Michigan, clouds and an onshore flow keep lows from falling below zero. The low of 10 above at Muskegon is 35 degrees warmer than the low at Lansing.

1996: A blizzard moving through the Dakotas pulls warm air up over Michigan. Record highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s are followed by a line of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms. At least one weak tornado is spawned by the squall line, which is quickly followed by a blast of arctic air and rain changing to snow. Rapids snowmelt and heavy rains, followed by a quick freeze, leads to many areas of ice jam flooding.

January 19

1907: Southerly winds bring moist and mild weather with highs in the 50s followed by heavy rains as a cold front moves through. Grand Rapids sets a record high for the date of 56 degrees along with a record rainfall total of 1.84 inches.

1979: A homeowner was killed when his garage roof collapsed due to the weight of the snow on it. Several other homeowners suffered injuries as roofs collapsed throughout southwest Michigan. There were more than 50 reported roof collapses by the end of February, with most of the collapses occurring in the second half of January. At one point the snow pack was measured as weighing more than 25 pounds per square foot.

1994: Temperatures remain below zero all day long. Extreme cold prevails from the 14th to the 21st but this is the coldest day. Grand Rapids ties the all-time record low for the month of January with 22 below zero, followed by a high of only 2 below zero. An unofficial low of 53 below zero is recorded in the Upper Peninsula at Amasa, Michigan. Water and sewer pipes freeze, causing 50 million dollars in damage across Michigan

January 20

1906: Temperatures soar into the 60s after a warm front moves through. Grand Rapids hits 64 degrees and Lansing rises to 62, the first of three days of record highs at Lansing.

1985: A vast stream of arctic air keeps high temperatures from rising much, with highs of zero degrees at Lansing and one above at Grand Rapids, along with a bitter west wind gusting to 25 mph.

We have been cold with mainly lake effect snow over the first half of winter.  No major synoptic events, just powdery snow with little water content.  From Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo we have had around 40 inches of snow thus far, much less to the east.

Looking ahead to the second half of winter it would be my guess we would see a more zonal pattern with perhaps more synoptic events, the question being will it bring more rain rather than snow as we begin trending upwards temperature wise.

High pressure will bring fair weather into the weekend. Low pressure will move in by Sunday, with southerly winds bringing warmer temperatures and some rain. The low will move by on Monday with colder temperatures and some snow showers for Monday night.

Today: A 40 percent chance of snow showers before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 25. West southwest wind 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 20. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 17 to 20 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 30. West southwest wind 14 to 17 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 22. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. South southwest wind 9 to 13 mph.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 30.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 41.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of rain showers before 10pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34.

Sunday: A chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 44.

Sunday Night: Showers. Cloudy, with a low around 36.

Monday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42.

Monday Night: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25.

Tuesday: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33.

GUSTY Winds Tonight….

Slim

We are in Marianna Florida. The trip from Bowling Green took longer than normal. There were some heavy snow showers in Tennessee. So that was kind of a slow go there was snow on the ground to just north of Birmingham. I thought we were thru all of the snow BUT south of Birmingham there were trucks going north with snow on them, Lots of snow. And then there was a convoy of snow plows (yes snow plows) and I knew that was not real good. Well before we got to Montgomery there was a good amount of snow on… Read more »

I’m at 52.4 inches and have had snow in the ground since December 9th over a month ago! You keep talking about last year why?? INDYDOG14!!

Well we’ve had snow on the ground since Sunday night. Last weeks warm up completely wiped out our snow pack down to bare ground. As for last year, it is brought up because of how remarkably similar the two Winters have been. Both started December with temps in the 50s and 60s, both started snowing on the exact same day, both have had record breaking thaws that obliterated the snow pack, and both had snow right after the thaw. Now it remains to be seen what is to come, but last year we had a LOT of rain in the… Read more »

Up north, 4 locations are reporting below average snow with 3 above average. If you can believe it, West Branch has only gotten 16.5″, Houghton Lake only 22.6″, and Alpena only 24.1.”

Here in Bowling Green KY there looks to be about 5” of snow and ice on the ground there is a lot of ice on the road signs and trees so they did get a lot of freezing rain along with the snow. The schools are still closed here today the main roads here in Kentucky are not bad the side roads not so good yet. Will see how they are in Tennessee as we head that way after breakfast there is snow all the way down into Florida so today will be another cold drive. I hope I can… Read more »

I’m not a big fan of Winter, but I do love Winters like we’ve been having! Cold don’t bother me at all cuz I hate the heat, and I love the fact we have not had much snow for several years, and when we do get it, it melts within a week or two!
