Warmer – Remaining Dry

Lots of sun yesterday with high temps of 65° after a morning low of 28° and just enough breeze to work comfortably outdoors.  My wife is in charge of our multiple flower beds and I do the veggie gardens and lawns.  Now that the danger of frost is (hopefully) gone it is time to get the tomatoes, peppers, etc into the ground.

I have already harvested some green onions which are pretty hardy in the early spring along with parsnips.  The ground is really dry and is going to take a lot of rain to regain its moisture content.  All the perennials are up and doing well even without the rain though I have had the hoses out already.  I use a fertilizer on the lawn which helps keep the grass drought tolerant – it is nice and green and thick – I have had the sprinklers on to try to give it at least half an inch of water this week.

I also opened up our fish pond this week.  We keep it covered in the winter.  We have a couple of dozen frogs who survived the winter, they just wake up from winter dormancy along with the fish.

Seems the work after our winter dormancy gets harder as both of us are in our mid-60s heading to our 70s.  More aches and pains but the work is enjoyable as we anticipate the bounty which comes from it.

Chances of precipitation slowly rises to 56% on Sunday night though at this time it is my thinking it may be a bit overdone.  We have another two days of almost total sunshine coming up before clouds increase on Saturday.

Forecast Discussion

--High Pressure Building with Warming Temperatures--

Dry air with building high pressure will dominate the weather
pattern today and into the weekend. The inversion at the surface
will allow for another cold morning with frost/freeze headlines
across Southwest Michigan.
As the inversion breaks down this morning, westerly winds will
pick up, though the winds will be fairly light around 5 to 10
mph. Temperatures will increase and given the high pressure, along
with the dry air, it will be a fairly warm day. Highs are
expected to be in the upper 60s through most of the region
potentially hitting the low 70s along the US-10 corridor. Fair
weather and warming temperatures will continue through the end of
the work week.

--Short wave with weak precipitation chances Saturday--

A short wave trough will filter its way into the region Saturday.
this will bring some increased cloudiness. However given the dry
pattern it will be difficult to form precipitation. There is a
slight chance Saturday afternoon. The best chance will be
Saturday night into Sunday with better mid to upper level
instability.

--Precipitation chances continues to trend southward--

The warm and dry conditions will continue through most of the
weekend. The model trends continue to keep the surface system,
and its warm front, mainly through the southern tier of Michigan.
So there is a decent chance of rain along the I-94 corridor late
Sunday into Monday. Precip amounts will be fairly low. The strong
jet aloft continues to trend southward, which will keep the
system and its corresponding warm front south of Michigan.

Early next week a negatively tilted ridge will building over the
upper midwest and into central Canada. This ridge will stifle
convection and continue the warming temperatures. There is an
opportunity to relieve the dry conditions mid to late next week
with a northward propagating shortwave, however there is some
disparity in the models so confidence in position and timing
remains low.

Texas is way too hot! I would never live in that state! Horrendous!

Once again there is a good amount of frost here in my area. I had a overnight low of 31 and so far it looks like the official low at Grand Rapids will be 33. And that would become the 7th coldest low for any May 13th of record at GR. I also hope that this is the last frost of this spring/summer season. Last year the last frost was on May 13th and last fall the 1st frost was on September 19th. West Michigan looks to remain on the dry side for a while and if that is the… Read more »

Yes, nice weather for the first day of sharpening at the Holland Farmers market yesterday. The wind did come up in the early afternoon, making it feel cooler. Just checked the forecast for central Kentucky, and they predict a high of 72 on Saturday (having a fam event there). Glad it won’t be like some springs of past, where they were already getting into the upper 80s. Also, interesting how the roller coaster temps of April have effected the bird migration. Many birds that should have been seen in numbers are yet to be seen (mostly the warblers)…

Another freeze last night! Down to 31 degrees! This may go down as one the longest May cold snaps ever! Incredible mid May cold!
