Yesterday we had a high temperature of 75° and the low of 63°. There was a quick peak of the sun in the afternoon, if you blinked you missed it. We also had a trace of rainfall in the morning.
Today will feature another mostly cloudy day with temperatures in the mid-70s with a 20% chance of a shower south of I 96. Tomorrow will see the return of lots of sun with temperatures in the upper 70s. Most of the week ahead will be mainly dry with temperatures in the 70s.
Weather History
1953: Temperatures soared to the 90s across western Michigan. Grand Rapids hit 93 degrees and Muskegon 92 degrees, both record highs and records for the latest date of a 90-degree reading.
1967: Wet snowflakes fell at Grand Rapids and Lansing. The high of 42 degrees at Lansing is the coldest high temperature for September.
1986: A severe weather outbreak produces high winds, large hail, and two tornadoes across Lower Michigan. One person was injured in Van Buren County as a tornado hit near Mattawan. A tornado near Rankin in Genesee County destroyed six houses.
2006: Several waterspouts were observed on Lake Michigan. One was about 5 miles offshore of Holland, while another was sighted just offshore of Saugatuck. This waterspout approached the coast and may have come onshore, but no damage was noted.
On September 29, 1966, the pressure dropped to 989mb during the passage of an intense early fall low-pressure system. This is the lowest pressure reading ever recorded for Detroit in the month of September.
NWS Forecast
Forecast Discussion
- Cloudy today with dwindling showers, fair weather Monday Latest satellite shows streaming clouds across the southeastern portion of the region with light showers continuing to the southeast of the I 69 corridor. As the remnants of Helene continue to move to the east these will pull away. POPS will continue to diminish today accordingly with skies improving through the day as well. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s with a ridge of high pressure building over the region from the west. This will allow for a dry forecast through Monday - Chance of Showers Tuesday Otherwise a Mostly Dry Week Ahead A shortwave in the nrn stream swings through the nrn GrtLks on Tuesday, sending a sfc cold front through the region. Guidance continues to indicate only paltry rain amounts of generally one tenth of an inch or less as this system comes through, with NBM pops only 20-40 percent (although higher pops to our north and east). Surface ridging quickly builds in behind the front on Tuesday night and we should be looking at some chilly overnight lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s. Even the possibility of some patchy frost for early Wednesday morning. For the middle of the week into next weekend a fast zonal flow is shown aloft with some baroclinicity present. However moisture appears to be generally lacking with surface ridging frequently dominating. Partly cloudy and dry conditions therefore expected to prevail with high temps near to slightly above normal in the 65 to 75 degree range.
Spent a lot of time outdoors over the past two days. Couldn’t help hearing the Sand Hill Cranes over head, and somewhere around 150 Geese. Must be time.
Quite a range in temps this afternoon. I see 80 in Grand Rapids while it’s only 67 in Hillsdale. At my house we have had lots of clouds so far today so it’s a little cooler around 77.
With a current mean temperature of 67.7 for September this will be the 9th warmest September of record at Grand Rapids. It will be the warmest since 2015 and will have a higher mean than 2017 that had a major heat wave.

That was a rather quick turnaround. Wasn’t earlier in September running below average? Hasn’t felt much like Fall yet with the heat. Curious to know how many months of the past year or so have been above or below average. Seems the majority has been above.
In the last 13 months there have been 10 warmer that average 1 below average (this past July) and 2 at just about average that is +/- 0.5 or less.
