Warm & Sunny – Weather History

Our summer-like pattern will continue through the rest of the week with a lot of sun and warm temps flirting with 80° before everything flips to cooler than normal with more fall like conditions next week well into October.  I am almost positive we shouldn’t see another 80° day until next spring after this week.

On a side note:  Monster my giant male cat is almost 100% after his run in with a car July 1st.  He was badly bruised and his tail was disarticulated where it attaches to his body.  I am happy to say he has complete use of his tail once again after I gave him daily ‘tail’ therapy by gently moving it around for him as he healed.   We thought we would have to have it removed during the first month of his recovery.

Weather History

September 20

1957: Thunderstorms with heavy rain of up to 2 inches flooded streets and viaducts in Grand Rapids.

1968: A tornado hits a rural area about five miles south of Lansing at 2:15 in the morning, damaging two barns and a shed.

September 21

1863: Lansing records a low temperature of 19 degrees, the coldest on record for the month of September.

1956: Intense lightning from thunderstorms is responsible for 11 house fires in Ottawa and Kent Counties, accounting for thousands of dollars in damage.

1967: A small tornado struck just north of Lansing at 10:45 in the morning and destroyed a garage.

1992: A tornado hit north of Webberville in Ingham County, damaging several outbuildings.

September 22

1952: Hail covered the ground like snow in Cascade Township, near Grand Rapids.

1961: A tornado hit two miles north of Marne. One person was injured and three buildings were heavily damaged.

September 23

2006: Small tornadoes hit Caledonia in Kent County and Muir in Montcalm County. The Caledonia tornado did some roof damage to a storage facility and a barn. The Muir tornado caused no structural damage but took down some tree limbs.

September 24

1950: Smoke from Canadian forest fires gave the sun an eerie bluish cast and darkened the sky across western Michigan.

September 25

1961: Widespread, heavy rain causes some flooding across western Michigan. Record daily rainfall totals occur at Muskegon, Lansing and Grand Rapids. The 3.52 inches of rain at Grand Rapids is a record total for any day in September.

September 26

1951: A tornado killed one person and injured three others near Bitely in Newaygo County. The tornado destroyed a tavern, carrying steel beams from the roof about 70 yards.

1965: Wet snow mixes in with rain across parts of western Michigan for a very early taste of winter.

1998: The temperature hits a record high of 89 degrees at both Grand Rapids and Lansing. The warm weather fuels a severe weather outbreak across the region as a cold front arrives during the late afternoon. A severe thunderstorm produced softball-sized hail in Clare County which smashed skylights, dented automobiles, and damaged roofs and antennas. Damage was estimated at up to half a million dollars.

Forecast Discussion

- Warm and mainly dry mid to late week

Mild and predominantly dry wx will continue through midday
Saturday. Some patchy early morning fog is expected today
especially north of KMKG/KGRR. The visibility has been down to a
quarter of a mile at times at Fremont early this morning and
we expect fog to gradually become a bit more prevalent early
today.

A few rain showers may affect central lower MI Thursday afternoon
and evening in closer proximity to the warm front over the
northern Great Lakes region. High temps will reach well into the
70s mid to late week.

- Smoke aloft at times

Smoke aloft will continue to advect in mid to late week
due to westerly mid level winds. HRRR smoke dispersion progs
suggest that smoke will linger today and again be most
prevalent over our southern fcst area. High temps may be held
down by a degree or two on days that smoke is rather thick.

- Rain late Saturday into early next week

A strong cold front will bring rain and potentially some
convection Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Post frontal
rain showers are forecast Sunday and especially early next week
as the upper trof digs in. Lake induced instability with h8 temps
falling to as low as 0 to -2 C by Tuesday will also support potential
for lake effect rain showers.

Michigan from May through September is some of the best weather in the entire country. We really are pretty spoiled where we live. Pretty much consistent 70’s and 80’s for 5 months of the year.

And if you prefer mainly 60’s, you get April and October too. That’s 7 months of the year for all your warm weather activities. I love it!

And don’t forget the past several Winters when it’s been 50’s and even 60’s in December and January. Last Christmas was awesome at 65 degrees! Who wouldn’t love that?

Yes, 7 warm months, 2 months of transition and blah, and about 3 months of snow/cold. But even the snow/cold months tend to have some very nice days scattered in them.
