Warm & Humid – Storm Chances – PM Update

We have some storms rolling through SW Michigan this morning – a lot of lightning and rumbling going on in Otsego.  Temp is a warm 73° at 5 am with rain.  We haven’t had much stormy weather this summer thus far so this is a welcome change to all the sunny hot days we have had.

Chance of rain and storms is around 60% today and tonight, those lucky enough may pick up a half to 3/4 of an inch most likely this afternoon and evening.  Looking at point forecasts this morning the best chances of rain will be from I96 to the south.

We have plenty of hot summer weather in store this week with temps in the mid-80s.  Today is the best chance we have for rain all week.  We have an enhanced risk for storms:

I suspect we will see some watches in place later this afternoon.

Forecast Discussion

Main area to watch heading into this afternoon will be Iowa and
southern Wisconsin as multiple clusters of storms may try and form
a line by mid to late afternoon. Forecast MLCAPE values for our
region will be quite high, on the order of 3000 J/kg by early
evening, within SPC`s Slight Risk area across SW Lower MI. Both
0-6 km bulk shear and effective bulk shear approach 30 knots by
21z near and west of US 131, which is not superb but may be
adequate to support scattered strong to severe thunderstorm wind
gusts particularly south of I-96 and west of US 131 into late
evening. We believe the greatest threat for damaging winds would
be across northern Illinois. Any storms that make it across the
lake could produce 1"/hr rainfall rates before diminishing around
sunset.

Hey look, it’s a derecho! Many reports of 90+ mph wind reports in Iowa, and three over 100 mph.

Slim

Looks like the worst of the storms will stay south of the Grand Rapids area. But there is a better chance of some bigger storms to the south of GR. At this time it is 88 with a DP of 74 here at my house.

Very uncomfortable air mass yet again. Hit 90 here yesterday, actually had 91 on the car thermometer driving in hudsonville. Bring back the drier air!

Slim

It was a warm night last night both the official low at GRR and here at my house was 72. The official high at GRR yesterday was 89. While it did cloud up overnight and for much of the night temperatures were in the mid to upper 70’s there was no rain here at my house. At this time it is clear with a temperature of 75 and a DP of 68 here at my house.

INDY

Cold front is knocking on our door I will take it seems like forever ago since we had our last 90* degree day with Summer a 3rd of the way over now the sun is losing its kick days are getting shorter fast with average highs temps falling so can we say August is a transition month?? September never looked so better Herr it comes and That’s my Monday thought have a good day INDY …..

Slim

There now only 21 days left in meteorological summer. The last time it officially reached 90 or better here at GR was on July 26th so it has not been that long ago. So far this year there have been 14 days of 90 or better. 58 days of 80 or better. There has been 83 days of 70 or better. On the flip side there have been 90 nights of 32 or below so far this year. And 108 nights of lows of 40 or below.

Doesn’t look like much water sitting in the rain gauge (just east of Hamilton)… at this point, maybe a tenth at best. Sure could use a good .5-1 inch. Hope everyone is healthy and have a good week!
