Unsettled Pattern Continues

Just as the title states we are in the throes of an unsettled weather pattern.  Unsettled means a condition in the atmosphere conducive to precipitation. This term typically is associated with the passage of surface or upper-level low-pressure systems, fronts, or other phenomena when precipitation expected.

This week we expect wide fluctuations in temperature with rain and perhaps a few snowflakes mixed in for good measure.  We may see temps near 70° in the Thursday Friday timeframe as a tease for those who like warmer weather.  All in all, temps will remain below normal for the rest of October which is in the mid-50s in SW Michigan.

As surface high pressure builds to our northwest in the northern Great Lakes, a swath of rain associated with a shortwave aloft will persist through the Ohio Valley and up into southeastern lower MI. Meanwhile, another bit of shortwave energy will eject out of South Dakota bringing precip in our direction during the late afternoon/evening time frame. The only slight concern with this precip will be the chance for some snow to mix in, primarily for Central Lower near US-10 where temperatures will drop closer to freezing.

When I see a long range winter guess I post them here for the fun of it. Today I have one from a long range guess I have not heard of any way his name is Ben Noll. His guess is for the NE but it give you the general idea. “Not expecting the coldest of winters Short but sharp cold snaps will be followed up by mild air Probably more snow than last year (not hard to do, I know!) January looks like the snowiest month I wouldn’t be shocked if the vibe was a not-so-bad winter overall” His… Read more »

I would tend to agree with that one. Fits the overall pattern we’ve been in for several years now. Might have snow one week, but it all quickly disappears the next week with mild weather. Should make everyone happy.
