I pulled the info from the NWS Jetstream Library – I have noticed the NWS has a lot of broken links on their educational materials so I have been trying to get the info here on this site before it is lost. There are three pages to the quiz – I hope you got them all.
Kind of brought me back to my college days taking my computer science classes sweating out the weekly exams and the thesis’s for the semesters – I am happy to say I pulled it off with straight A’s through it all. I went to college in my 40s and my classmates were 20 years my junior and I was the same age as most of my teachers. The problem with computer science is the technology is always changing and one has to keep up with it, kind of like auto mechanics.
The cold, the rain and snow will be sneaking in after a nice day yesterday. Normal temps are in the low 50s – we will be 10 to 15° below normal. We reached 53° yesterday in Otsego – we won’t see that again for awhile. We may see a few snowflakes in southern Michigan, the best chances will be north of Grand Rapids where accumulating snow may fall. The best chances for lake effect will be coming late in to the weekend when a cold shot of air moves in. Whether this is a prelude to what winter will be like remains to be seen – time will tell. It has been a lot of years since we have had snow on the ground for the whole winter. Below are the comparisons in snow cover between this year and last.

Well they came thru here and cut grass and picked up the leaves. I think that is it now till Spring. I have been thinking of putting up a couple of Christmas decorations before the real cold weather sets in. I just don’t turn them on till day before Thanksgiving. I hear they have Christmas songs on the radio. I don’t think I ever get tired of it. 🙂
We hung ours the past few days. Only had them on to check them out. Lol

Who loves winter and who wants to see about 100 inches of snow this Season?
Or better yet, who wants to see us stay below average in snowfall this season as we currently are right now? I think I know which one would win in a vote. Maybe MV can put up a poll question to find out.
Lol
Mokie may fly In for that vote lol….Summer warmth seems so far away darn…INDY

First off if anyone is wondering if a cold and snowy November leads to a cold and snowy winter. Well no two seasons are alike, but if you like analog years and like a lot of cold and snow looking at 1991 may not be one you would want to use for this year. That year early November was very cold and snowy. On November 3rd Grand Rapids had 10.4” of snow. The high on that day was just 23. For the month there were 5 days that did not get out of the 20’s and the low for that month was 14. For the month as a whole the mean was 35.7°and that is -4.4 The cold was mostly before the 15th of the month and on the 19th the temperature reached 67 and of course the snow was all gone. It reached 60 again on the 30th. It did turn cold and snowy for a week in December and during that time a good amount of that December’s 27.9” of snow fell but before Christmas it was all gone. January was mild with just 13.4” of snow at Grand Rapids. And February was also mild with just 3.5” of snow fall. I am just letting every one know that a cold and snowy November may not lead to a cold and snowy winter.

Yes, that year is a good example. It’s always rather humorous when we get some November snow and there are some who will insist that it means we will get snow nonstop till April.
Yes, some like to over state there own opinions ..Lol ..
OK as for the number of days with at least 1″ of snow cover at Grand Rapids the most days is 124 days in the winter of 1903/04. In more recent times in 5th place is 2013/4 with 109. In 14th place is the winter of 2009/10 with 94 and in 19th place is the winter of 2007/08 with 92. On the flip side the years with the least number of days with at least 1″ of snow on the ground at Grand Rapids in 1st place is 1982/83 with just 23 days for more recent winters 2011/12 is in 4th place with 34 days and 2016/17 is in 12th place with 42 days of snow cover. Now was November cold and snowy in any of the above years? On the longer snow cover years November 1903 colder then average but with less snow. The other years 2013 colder than ave less snow. 2009 and 2007 warmer with less snow then ave. On the flip side November in 1982, 2011 and 2016 were all either warmer than average and all had less snow then average. So based on this small sample on can not say for sure what inpact a November will have on the upcoming winter.

So far this Fall sure seems close to identical to last year. Both Septembers were close to the same, both Octobers played out the same, and now this November is looking a lot like last years trend. Could be a mild and snowless December on tap again?
Cold and snow in November may not lead to cold and snow for the rest of the winter season. While I sure it cold happen it has many times gone the other way with less cold and snow over all for the winter season, we shall see.
